Trank lived a good life with his family. He was used to affluency as a child, to be able to afford luxurious things.
He was also born into the love of technology, of computers. His parents made a lot of money being consultants to Czerka and similar companies and they used their wealth to give a really good education to Trank and his two older brothers, Adam, and Teel. They became exceptional slicers, all three of them.
The family had another advantage: the brothers always kept together yet they never stopped competing. It was fierce but harmless, and it stuck: Trank's life would always be about setting goals, destroying them, and then setting even higher goals to strive for.
The three brothers became independent contractors. Trank started taking up jobs where it was mostly his slicing aptitude at work. But slowly and surely the jobs became more challenging: sometimes he was requested to do the slice from inside, while blending in the victims' companies. The jobs paid well, and that was the thing that kept Trank going.
And then that wasn't enough either, he needed more, he needed more excitement. He took up jobs where it wasn't sure he would get paid...or survive even. He took up jobs where he was on the side of the innocents and jobs where he was definitely helping the bad guys...not because of money, not anymore. The challenge mattered. The goal mattered.
Soon, though, it all collapsed on him.He saved a bit of money, only parts of what he used to have and jumped on a ship that took him anywhere. He ended up at Ord Cantrell.
