Cryssa is one daughter of two people who have fought against the Empire all their lives. She has a twin brother, Sorren and an older sister, Nyssa. They have been running, trying to escape the iron fist of the Imperials all her life, all she can remember. This is why the kids did not receive any formal education: there was nowhere for them to go to school as they were moving from system to system.

After an incident at the Ryloth system, it turned out Cryssa is gifted by much more than two parents with indomitable fighting spirits: she can wield the Force. She was able to disappear from sight for short periods of time. From this time onwards, their journey became much more of a cat and mouse game across the galaxy. During this time did her parents encounter interplanetary woman of mystery Vanis Rizz, who shared their aversions with regards to the Empire, so for a few months, they spent time together using various means to make ends meet, to strike down at Imperial forces, and to survive.

There was an..event on Kafrene. Apparently they had to forward some really important information. The operation was a bust. This was where Cryssa got separated from her family and got stuck with Vanis. They ran away together, and they spent most of their time in hiding, and Vanis started teaching her new things previously mostly unkown to her. History, dates, important events and names from past long gone, physical training, the basics of how to wield a weapon....and meditation, looking at herself from the outside, deeper knowledge. This was not how traditional schools looked like, but she had no option to go to traditional schools, and she enjoyed it. It turned out Vanis was a Jedi in hiding, and she tried to pass her knowledge along before her time was up, because she was quite sure the Inquisitors would come for her.

They had to separate for some time, but Vanis instructed Cryssa to travel to Hosnian Prime and wait for the Nebulon-B frigate Destiny and meet her on board.
