Background
Exiled from Kinyen because an attempt to protect his family ended with a murder charge, Kaa-Roak ended up among smugglers, scoundrels, and other scum. Feeling forsaken by everybody who would have had his back before, he resolved to train with a blaster until he could hold his own and scare off any aggressor. But instead of gaining a measure of peace and safety, he ended up with a reputation as an actual gunfighter ... which, coupled with growing gambling debts, led him deeper and deeper into a life of violence and crime.
Recently, he found himself in deep trouble on Vandor when he got into a quarrel with a Core Worlder aristocrat. The human, who fancied himself a big game hunter and masterful gambler, used his influence at the local garrison to get Kaa-Roak arrested and sentenced to a one-way trip to Avernum, a penal planet where anyone can be forgotten ...

Company's Cursed Call
After the - for a Gran - traumatic experience of getting exiled, he has lost his faith in things like kinship and community. But underneath an armour of cynicism and suspiciousness, he's deeply conflicted - yearning for companionship, and at the same time recoiling from opening himself to it. These days, he mostly ends up in bars and gambling establishments, hoping to numb that yearning with alcohol, games of chance, and the occasional bar fight. Anything to avoid being alone.
