Background

As an egg, before she was born, Qi was abandoned by her real parents. The egg was left to rot in the trash outside Cloud City's Four-and-a-Half Cantina. There, she was found by Breela, the young human woman who's family owned the cantina.

Breela raised Qi for the first few years of her life, keeping her a secret. She called her "girl," never naming her, and treated Qi with distant affection (but was never cruel). Even that young, Breela would put Qi into dangerous situations to teach her independence, self-reliance, and how to survive in the slimy underworld of Cloud City.

Once Qi could reliably shapeshift, Breela hatched a plan to give Qi all the opportunities she could. Breela would take Qi to stalk the highest class citizens of Cloud City, watching them, learning their mannerisms. Qi would spend hours practicing to be just like them, and shapeshifted their best qualities under Breela's sometimes overly critical instruction.

After a year, seven-year-old Qi was, in Breela's opinion, perfected. Under Breela's eye, Qi had formed the habits, mannerisms, and personality of the elite, and had shapeshifted herself into the young version of what Breela (and most others) would consider the pinnacle of human female beauty.

The final step of the plan unfolded. Breela targeted the underworld characters that served high-class, powerful, and wealthy Cloud City families. Soon word spread like wildfire among the elite of a nameless, beautiful orphan girl living in the dirtiest places of Cloud City's underground. It was almost a competition to see who could adopt her.

The Baron Administrator at the time got involved. He was supposed to send her to the family that would be in her best interest, but he was easy to corrupt and instead sent her to the highest bidders: the Shen family.

The Shen family was, at the time, only visiting a vacation home they owned on Cloud City. Crushed and heartbroken (though she never said so or showed it), Breela was forced to let Qi go.

The Shen family, Pantorans, lived on Coruscant, which is where Qi spent the next 6 years. She was named Aris Shen. Her parents were wealthy investors in a subsidiary branch of the Bank of the Core, specializing in venture capital. One of their clients, a commissioner in the Imperial Trade and Commerce Authority named Marus Grayson, headed a business enterprise that flopped. Rather than going bankrupt because of his debt to Bank of the Core, he used his connections in the Empire to freeze and seize the branch's assets with allegations of treason. This effectively ruined the Shen family, causing them to flee Coruscant and move permanently to their Cloud City vacation home. There, the Shens became tax administrators.

Though Qi's few years on Coruscant were pleasant enough, the family's betrayal by Grayson made the Shens miserable. Her adoptive mother left, and things got worse. Her "father" died in Qi's teenage years of mysterious causes, leaving behind Qi and her adoptive brother, Arend. The two barely tolerated each other, with Arend only staying cordial with Qi because of their joint ownership over their father's financier practice.

Back on Cloud City, Breela and Qi were reunited. Qi spent all of her free time escaping the guard detail she was given to be in the Four-and-a-Half again. As she got older, she learned martial arts and fought in the cantina's ring. Breela always saved her before she was knocked unconscious, as this would cause Qi to shift back to her Clawdite form.

One time, however, Breela was unable to pull Qi out after she received a knock-out punch from another female. Breela pulled her out just as she was shifting, caught just in time to keep her form reveal between herself and the other fighter.

The other fighter turned out to be a bounty hunter in House Renliss. Impressed by Qi, the bounty hunter brought her to Dartessex IV, the House headquarters. There, Qi was evaluated by the Renliss sisters and added to the guild. She underwent training and became a respected huntress of House Renliss, where she named herself Qi Kodai.

It has now been 10 years since the Shen family was ruined, and 16 since Qi was sent off for adoption. Her most recent mission was on Kuat, where she was sent to pick up a corporate spy attempting to flee to the planet's surface. She finished the mission, but found that her ship had been stolen in the process.

She was approached by Imperial officer Uma Waite, who offered to pay 1000 credits to tell her where the thieves had taken the stolen ship. Qi obliged, under the agreement that the ship would be returned to Qi afterwards. They arranged to meet on Cloud City with the ship, where Qi often returned to see Breela and make appearances with her brother at the financier firm. This time, however, she learned of Marus Grayson's return to Cloud City to sell a shipment of Tibanna gas, and of her brother's plot to overthrow it.

She found out Arend knew about her status as a Bounty Hunter, and he leverages this over her in exchange for her help in stealing the money, stealing the gas, and exacting revenge on Grayson for ruining the Shen family and name.

Motivation

Finish the Job (ND:37). Qi became a bounty hunter and joined House Renliss because she felt like she finally belonged somewhere, where her talents and skills were useful. Plus, she thinks it's fun. She loves having what she considers a true family that SHE chose. Ever loyal to House Renliss, Qi is motivated by getting jobs done, doing her best on them, and reporting back her successes to the House. She never wants to fail or let down the house, which means her utmost concern is finishing jobs she is given.

Duties

Counter-intelligence (AoR:47). Qi wants to hunt down and eliminate enemy agents and threats, feed false information to Imperial intelligence networks, and cover the movements of all Alliance assets from observation and reporting.

Description

She is slim, but curvy, wearing a tight spandex-like suit covered by a leather vest, a tool belt, and a cape. She has gun holsters on her thighs and tall boots that blend into her suit. The bottom half of her face is covered with a mask. All you can see is black hair that comes an inch or two below her chin. Out of her hair sticks two pointed ears. She has furrowed eyebrows, and dark, smoky makeup around her eyes.

Other Notes

Qi's affiliation isn't necessarily with the Rebellion. In fact, she leans more towards the Empire. Her true loyalties lie with House Renliss, which is run by two former Imperial Intelligence officers, and which gets a lot of work from the Empire. With that said, if shown the atrocities of the Empire, she may begin to pull away from Imperial jobs and take others instead.
