Background

Tyx Ssykoo - or as he came to be known 'Ticks' - was raised in relative obscurity with a small hive of Verpine workers at a once-successful wrecking/recycling yard on the Outer Rim owned by a Corellian named Dallben. As business turned south and Dallben shut the operation down to retire on a pleasure planet somewhere, chunks of the hive left in search of work until only a scant few Verpine remained to pick the metal carcasses, too old or set in their ways to consent to start life anew elsewhere. It was atypical of Verpine, who normally have around 100 members in a hive at all times, to split up a hive, but for those that left it was an easy decision to shed the weak as-yet unhatched and the elderly to ensure the survival and growth of the Hive, elsewhere. Tyx was hatched into the fractured and embittered remnant of the former Dallben Hive.

Tyx initially farmed Magenge with the other hatchlings, under the close supervision of an elderly and kind monk named K'tck. K'tck often tried to teach the hatchlings of the Sacred Way and was a generally positive influence upon the hatchlings, though Tyx didn't give any credence to K'tck's religion and talk of Space Gods and their divine inspiration bestowed upon the faithful. The speeches that Tyx paid most attention to were from the salvagers and engineers as they discussed parts and schematics amongst each other. Tyx was blissfully unaware of how downtrodden they all were, and how far this Hive was from the pinnacle of Verpine engineering so revered throughout the galaxy. Despite being too young to safely work in the yards and repair shop, Tyx pursued the work in his mind, going so far as to imagine designing and assembling the starships and systems.

When he was old enough, Tyx was permitted to shadow the salvagers, the repairers and the engineers in their work. He learned their skills quickly and frequently put them to use. Tyx tinkered with the old ships and vehicles in the scrap heaps and honed an ability to just make things work with what was available. He often re-assembled and repaired systems, ships, and vehicles from the various re-purposed archaic parts salvaged from the yard. However, with little to no major customers, there was no actual focussed work to be done or deadlines to be met, and certainly no-one to truly appreciate the work Tyx produced. The severe lack of lofty design or engineering challenges to unite the Hive in purpose, and the decreasing frequency of meaningful telecommunication between hivemembers was no place to develop the legendary efficiency and finesse of the Verpine engineering. Tyx felt increasingly isolated from the Hive, and more in need of change.

A ship from the core worlds arrived one day under the auspices of checking out the obscure parts collections for anything rare they could sell. They actually wanted to secure a safe and isolated place to establish an outpost for storage and smuggling of large quantities of Glitterstim and Carsunum from the Outer Rim for a prominent drug cartel. They made an offer to the Hive to maintain a front and allow them to build their outpost, and Tyx saw an opportunity to acquire funding and resources for their own purposes. However, several of the others did not wish become involved in illegal operations and blocked Tyx’s proposal. Without consensus, the Hive could not collectively agree to permit the outpost to be built, so their answer to the smugglers was 'no'. The smugglers left, and life went on for a time. Tyx resolved to leave despite the lack of consensus and booked passage aboard the ship in exchange for labour as a mechanic and a number of re-purposed ship and vehicle components Tyx had restored. Tyx stayed with that crew for a time, enjoying the steady work on the ship and the opportunity to continue tinkering with designs. At least in the Core worlds there was something of an opportunity to get his hands on some real cutting-edge technology if he could become skilled enough and impress people with deep pockets.

He did miss home, surprisingly to him, and sent a missive back one day to check up on the Hive and his family. It went unanswered. Months went by, with Tyx occasionally sending a letter home and wondering why no responses were returned. By happenstance, he ran into a pair of outer rim traders while his crew was docked for a job, and they relayed the unfortunate news about the Dallben colony. It turned out the cartel did not appreciate being rebuffed and had razed the colony, killing several and scattering its surviving occupants.

Motivation

Waste Not Want Not: Coming from a recycling/salvage background, Tyx hates to see scrap or components go to waste. Tries to devise ways to recycle and re-use or re-purpose things he comes across. Dislikes the thought of later finding out that something he threw away or left behind would have been useful.

Invention: Tries to bring the ideas and theoretical concepts from his mind into being. Sometimes targeted at resolving a specific problem. Sometimes testing a theory or creating a proof of concept. Likely to try to reinvent the wheel from time to time, even if the results aren't particularly useful.

Obligations

20
A score to settle: Tyx seeks revenge against the specific cartel members who razed his home colony in punishment for declining to act as a front for their operations. The only thing he has to go on is the name of their ship: the YT-2000 Tigana and the captain's name: Rex Webb

Responsibility: Tyx seeks to locate the displaced members of his home Hive he heard had survived and help them if he can.
1) K'tck; 2) Ge'Kos; 3) Ukust; 4) Tilk; 5) Nahs Ulik; 6) Moergin; and 7) Rahxys.

Description

An tall spindly insect with pale green skin and barely any clothing - just a functional utility belt to help carry his equipment. Antennae seem darker and scarred. About average height for a Verpine at 2m (just over 6'6).

Other Notes

Microvision: The compound eyes of a Verpine are capable of seeing tiny, even microscopic details. When closely examining an object, Verpine characters add a boost die to their Perception Checks.
Radio-wave Communicaion: Verpine can produce and hear radio waves, which allows them to silently communicate with other Verpine and specially tuned comlinks within a 100 kilometer range.
