Anata Diram was born in the year 22 BBY on Falooa, a sparsely populated colony world in the Outer Rim. The remote planet was originally settled over 1000 years ago by mining companies for convenience as the moons orbiting a large gas giant in the same system were rich in valuable metals. After centuries of strip-mining the moons have now mostly been abandoned, since it is no longer considered profitable to mine the moons further.
When mining collapsed in the system the population on Falooa fell dramatically. It went from being a prosperous planet with well over 10 million settlers to a farming planet with less than one million inhabitants spread over two large landmasses.
Anata grew up in a small farming village on the coast of the larger landmass. Her parents, Tanook and Felena, moved to Falooa when her mother was pregnant with Anata, and bought a small farm and were content with a simple life. They didn't speak much about their past before they came to Falooa, but it was no secret that Anata's father had been some sort of mercenary or soldier in his previous life. There was no hiding the scars.
Anata's parents home-schooled her and wanted her to work on the farm with her two younger brothers, Telto and Gual. She was always looking for something more in life, and kept sneaking away to the modest data-library in the town hall. There she could spend days reading through any text she came across, teaching herself about various subjects she found interesting.
When Anata turned 15 she already had a plan to persuade her parents to send her to the capital to get an education. They managed to stall her by promising that when she was 18 she could go to a university there if she studied hard. She needed no further incentive to study.
Everything changed two years ago, just as Anata had been accepted to the farming administration department of the planet‘s only university. A couple of years earlier, traces of Duranium had been found on Falooa. Now Imperial Mining had secures permissions for an operation on the planet. The company set up a large operation and opened up several open pit mines on the larger landmass.
With Imperial Mining came a much greater interest from the Empire. The sector Moff was a close friend of the local director of Imperial Mining, and a garrison of Imperial soldiers was sent to the planet to protect the interests of the Empire.
The local residents protested the mining operation an what they saw as an occupation by the Empire. When protests fell on deaf ears the locals formed a resistance movement. Anata's parents were among the founders. Her father traveled off-world and got into contact with the Rebel Alliance. The Alliance supplied the locals with information and what ever weapons they could spare.
The local uprising was met with deadly force by the Imperial garrison. The locals used guerrilla tactics which the Empire found hard to react to, as the locals knew the thick forests and mountain ranges better than the Imperial soldiers.
When the freedom fighters set off a bomb and destroyed several Imperial transports, killing or wounding dozens of Imperial soldiers, they did not realize that the sector Moff was visiting his friend in Imperial Mining on the planet at the time. He saw the whole thing as an attack on his person, since the troops were en route to pick him up from the spaceport where his shuttle had just landed. He ordered the insurrection quashed, once and for all.
A week later three Imperial Star Destroyers arrived in the system. The ground forces from the ships engaged in a brutal campaign against the freedom fighters, supported by fighters and bombers. The freedom fighters never stood a chance against such an indiscriminate campaign. Tens of thousands of innocents lost their lives as the fighters were hounded and exterminated where ever they could be found.
Anata's brothers and mother died in a bombing attack on a convoy of civilians fleeing the fighting. Anata was with her father at the time, meeting with representatives of the Rebel Alliance. The rebels were led by a princess from Alderaan who had arrived on the planet under the guise of a mission of mercy. They desperately wanted to get some of the freedom fighters off world and to safety, but the blockade put in place by three Star Destroyers was impenetrable. In the end they decided that there was no chance of getting anybody off world, and the Alliance representatives would have to get away to avoid being implicated.
Anata's father pleaded with the Alderaanian princess to take his daughter with her, reasoning that she would be able to smuggle just one person on her transport. The princess risked her diplomatic mission by smuggling the young Togruta girl onto her ship, berating the customs official who wanted to search her vessel to keep her young charge safe.
Anata later learned that her father had been captured the day after she left the planet. He was found guilty at a brief trial and sent to an unidentified prison world to serve a life sentence.
The Alderaanian princess took Anata with her to a hidden rebel base, where Anata immediately asked to join the Rebel Alliance. She now realized that her hope to free her home world hinged on the success of the Rebel Alliance, and the fall of the Empire.
Anata went through evaluation where her superiors found that although she lacked formal education she was highly intelligent and had in fact helped the freedom fighters on her world to plan numerous attacks and operations. She also demonstrated leadership abilities and good personal skills. Her superiors were uncertain how to best use her abilities. Some wanted her to become a member of the Alderaanian princess's staff to train as a diplomat. Others wanted to use her tactical acumen and leadership skills and place her in a unit of rebel commandos.
In the end she was placed under the command of her would-be mentor, Gertion Camal, a middle-aged human who had defected from the Empire years ago. He led a small team of rebel operatives on various missions for the Rebel Alliance.
After Anata joined his team they were sent on a mission to a remote planet where the Empire had placed a listening post. Intel suggested that the post had up-to date codes that would enable a large operation to take place if the outpost could be taken without alarm going out. The codes could then be used for several days until the fate of the outpost became known.
Camal allowed his young charge to plan the assault, under his supervision. The rebel intel suggested that resistance would be minimal. A group of 12 rebels trekked through a heavy jungle to surprise the defenders and attacked according to Anata's plan.
The rebels walked straight into a trap. As they approached the outpost several shuttles landed troops and vehicles in the jungle behind them, and a platoon of Storm Troopers attacked from the outpost. Camal realized that the whole operation was a trap, which meant that there could very well be a mole within the Rebel Alliance. He knew he had to get one of his team out to warn the Alliance, no matter the cost, and led his men on a suicidal attack on the outpost. They managed to break through to an attached shuttle bay, losing several men in the attack.
Camal ordered Anata to break into the Lambda-class shuttle in the shuttle bay and escape the planet, and staged a doomed last stand to buy her time. Anata got away. She kept her comm open as she sliced into the shuttle control system and flew off world. She heard the screams of her teammates, and then the silence as each of them fell as the Storm Troopers assaulted their positions.
Anata managed to get to hyperspace before the Imperial cruiser in orbit could capture or destroy the shuttle, and reported back to the Alliance. She never heard if they managed to ferret out the mole. She was taken off active duty after the incident and her superiors now need to decide if they want to push her hard and send her on another mission, or cut her lose for a while to allow her to recover before taking on another mission.
Anata blames herself for not taking the mission seriously enough to contemplate that they might be walking into an ambush, and getting her team killed. She doubts her own abilities to plan, let alone lead. She has considered leaving the Alliance, thinking that she would only fail again if given the chance, but now thinks that perhaps she should enlist as a foot soldier to be able to fight without the responsibility of command.
Anata wants to free her home world, and sees the restoration of the Republic and the downfall of the Empire as the only way to secure that freedom.
