Background
Background: Jacen Tildar was a proud member of the Imperial Navy for many years. His talents with computer systems, and infiltration put him on a fast track for promotion, and a slot in an Imperial Counter-Intelligence team. He would help root out the terrorist elements, calling themselves the Rebellion, and insure order and peace in the Empire.
And then the incident on Tundali 3 happened....
Jacen was sent down as part of an escort for one of the Inquisitors, who had recently joined their fleet. He never explained why they were going where they were, simply pulled together a squad and headed for the surface. What was on the surface, was a small farming community of mixed beings.
The Inquisitor proceeded to order the townsfolk rounded up, and the squad searched their homes. They found equipment, used to pirate signals on the holo-net, and Jacen knew they had found their terrorist splinter in this neck of the woods. He dismantled the equipment, and the rest of the squad gathered the couple that lived in that house for transport to the fleet. As they were preparing to leave, the Inquisitor ordered the townspeople executed. Jacen, unsure why this would be necessary, they had found their criminal afterall, questioned the Inquisitor, and was suddenly under his scrutiny. He questioned Jacen's loyalty to the Empire, and ordered him to fire the first shot into the crowd. Jacen afraid for his life, gave in, and shot an old man among the cowering farmers. The massacre was quick and bloody.
After, Jacen focused on his training, trying to bury the memory in his work, but every night, he would hear their screams. One day, during close quarters combat training at a nearby base, his mind was wandering, from lack of sleep, guilt, and pressure to excel. He wasn't paying attention to his sparring partner, but felt himself almost slip out of his own awareness, and suddenly found himself standing behind his opponent. The rest of the room got quiet, as he looked around, to see everyone's eyes on him. Jacen wasn't sure why they were all staring, until her turned around, and saw the Inquisitor standing there, looking down at him. "That was an impressive bit of foot work" He said, his smile as cruel and cold as Jacen had remembered it. "I think you should come with me, we have much to discuss." The Inquisitor snapped his fingers, and two of his personal guard, armed with staves, flanked Jacen. Jacen followed, despite a growing sense of fear in his stomach.
As he was lead across the base grounds, he knew in his core, that if he went with this Inquisitor, he wouldn't like what happened to him. So, in a desperate moment of terror, and seeing an opportunity, he ran, darting between some Imperial transport speeders, he stole one of them from it's driver, and made a break for the exit. He made it through the gates barely, only to see the Inquisitors two guards giving chase. He drove as fast as he could, until he felt the speeder shake, and saw one of the two guards, perched on the back of the vehicle, his staff in his outstretched hand. Jacen felt the staff connect with his right shoulder, and the pain was intense. He veered the speeder left and right, trying to shake off the guard, but it didn't work, he just wouldn't let go. Eventually, Jacen tossed caution to the wind, set the speeder on full speed, and turned to try and fight the guard. The two of them wrestled for a time, until the speeder went over the edge into a nearby ravine. Both men were tossed from the vehicle, falling to the hard ground below. The vehicle exploded, the debris collapsing down on top of them. When Jacen came to, he was broken, bloody, but alive, the same could not be said for the guard. Much of the falling debris had landed on him, crushing his body. Jacen was able to retrieve the guards staff though, and used it to hobble away from the wreckage.
Jacen was able to escape the nearby area, but every moment, he feared that he would turn around to see the Imperial forces coming to reclaim him, the Inquisitor at their head. But it never happened. He figured they reported him dead, given the nature of the explosion, it wasn't an unreasonable theory to explain the lack of pursuit. He hid for several weeks while he healed, and then bought passage off the planet with a nearby trader, offering his meager talents as a gunner to pay his way.
Since then, Jacen has moved near constantly, taking what work he can find, usually slicing for unsavory types, or freelance gunner on transport ships when he can. After more than a year of this life, he was eventually felt out by a nearby Rebellion cell, who had hired him for a slicing job, and been impressed with the results. The job, mostly a test, lead Jacen to be in the backroom of a smoky cantina, talking to an earnest Solustan about his feelings on the Empire, and how he might like to work against them. Jacen, remembering the face of the man he killed, and the look on the Inquisitors face, agreed.
Now, he's a relatively new operative for the Rebellion, focusing mostly on slicing work, stealing data that can help them, or hinder the Empire. Some don't trust him, given his past in the Imperial Navy, and his position in the Rebellion reflects that. He doesn't mind though, he can't blame them for not trusting him.
He's heard talk from others in the Rebellion, about the Inquisitors, and how they are looking for "special" people, and how they are abducting them left and right. It makes Jacen wonder just what is so "special" about him, to warrant the Inquisitors interest, so he looks for data about these programs, and others who might be like him.
