When Lassa was a child, the Republic was reformed into the Galactic Empire. At first little changed that caused anyone any concern. In fact, people everywhere celebrated. It wasn't long before the rights of non-humans began to disappear from many of the Empire-controlled civilizations. Lassa's parents were among the first on Shili to speak out, which inspired others to rise up with them. To counteract the voice of protest, the Empire made an example of Lassa's parents by imprisoning them. Lassa was also taken, but was separated from her family. Although she did nothing wrong, the Empire did not want her growing up with righteous vengeance for what happened to her parents. To dispose of her, she was sold into slavery in Hutt territory.

Lassa obeyed her Hutt master for many years as she grew up in chains. In her heart, she did not accept her fate, though. It took many years of careful planning and self-taught education, but Lassa was able to work out a plan to escape her chains. Over the course of several months in the moments she wasn't being watched, Lassa manipulated the mechanical doors holding back the caged wild kath hounds in the enclosure. When they were awaiting a meal and hungry, she set them loose to maul the guards. While the guards were too distracted to watch Lassa, she gained access to the compound's computers and deactivated the explosive implants inside her. The chaos did not last long, but it was just long enough for her to slip out and stow away on a departing freighter.
