Sharky was born Ray Marwell on the planet Corfai (SoF 74) in the Correllian Sector. As a baby he was abandoned by his parents and lived in an orphanage until age 7, when the local pit bosses began to take an interest in his blossoming fighting ability. He was soon bought by a Trandoshan pit boss named Jaga. By age 13 he was winning every youth fighting tournament he entered. By age 21, he was champion of Corfai and had won tournaments on several other nearby planets. At 28, he was chosen to participate in the Correllian Sector close combat championship on Correllia. The best fighters from the entire sector were there. He was desparate to win so he could use the substantial winnings to buy out his contract and free himself from a life of arena combat. Moreover, his younger brother Billy Marwell (21), who he had discovered was his brother 5 years prior, had accidentally run afoul of the local Twi'lek crime organization Shanto. Ray's plan was to buy out his contract, leave Corfai, and live somewhere safe with his brother. Ray did win the tournament but Jaga would not honor the contract and refused to let Ray go, on account of the value Ray represented. Ray snapped and fought his way out, grabbing Billy in a rush, and leaving the sector on a frieghter ship. They planet hopped for a few years before Ray was able to get enough credits to find a safe, remote planet for Billy to live on. Ray couldn't live with Billy as he would always be a danger to him. So Ray changed his name to Sharky, got cosmetic surgery, and left to take on a job as a hired gun.

To protect his brother and reach a point where he might be able to negotiate with Jaga to settle the contract.
