Background
Lum's people are not fully integrated into galactic society, so making the choice to leave home makes her unique among the other Mustafarians. While there is room in her culture for inventors and engineers, she seeks to elevate to a level that can't be achieved in those conditions, training incessantly and picking up any knowledge any way they can. Working in a space port gave her the opportunity to learn a lot about different ship designs, new tech and machinery, as well as meet many new people, and eventually this lead to her getting a half decent job with the Imperial Navy with a reliable income and terrible treatment.
Motivation
Ambition: Expertise.
Lum wants to excel in their chosen profession and constantly practices to achieve perfection. She hopes to one day develop an invention or innovation that revolutionizes some field of science or engineering. She is keen on introducing novel twists to known designs or trying completely new and wild solutions to problems.
Obligations
30 Blackmail. Before Lllm got her somewhat cushy imperial job, she worked as the mechanic for a pirate gang for a few years. This is a Class One Offense under Imperial Penal Code, which could have her imprisoned for many years or for the rest of her life should it come to light to an imperial with any bit of command. Rebel intelligence is holding this over her like the leash on a dog.
