Kel came from moderate means on a basic moisture farm. His farm/family were always extorted from a local gang. When the Empire took power, he saw hope in the order promised.

Kel enlisted in the Storm Trooper army, where, over the course of 5 years with the help of his mentor Brax Turnal, he was trained and rose up through the ranks to become an officer. Then eerything changed when he witnessed a horrible act of genocide that made him rethink the altruism of the Empire (fill in more detail). After struggling with this for some time, he took an opportunity to be stationed on Tatooine, knowing he may find a chance to defect closer to the edge. He was successful in his escape, and his mentor, Brax Turnal, will never forget it... even considering going after him, although Kel doesn't know.

Kel found himself stranded and lost in the desert. To his luck, Kel was picked up by goons of Teemo the Hutt. Having recovered from his dehydration to some degree, Kel was unlikely to find himself in a gladiator like fight for the amusement of Teemo. No one expected him to triumph against the Gundark, however that is exactly what happened. Impressed to some degree, Teemo let Kel live and even gave him work on the condition of obligation: Kel owes him his life, which is not an easy debt to be repayed, especially since Kel also must work for Teemo to support himself with coin. Kel knows that if he leaves Teemo will find him and he won't be so nice again. Kel now works to rid himself of this obligation so he can be independent and go further to the core to find his family who he hasn't seen in years. Kel will fight against the Empire if given the chance, but I'd by no means looking to join a rebellion.
