Background
Born far from her ancestral homeland of Shili, Arani was raised among the marbled domes of Chandrila, adopted as a political symbol by Senator Aven Tanau. Publicly, she was the perfect image of diversity in the Republic—graceful, eloquent, and obedient. Privately, she was expected to be silent, ornamental.
Trained in etiquette, diplomacy, and emotional manipulation, she could turn a senate aide’s sympathies or silence a hostile room with a single glance. But she saw the rot beneath the elegance—particularly after the Republic fell and the Empire rose.
The breaking point came during an official transport voyage to Corellia, when Arani intercepted a high-clearance data chip containing the names and locations of dozens of people marked for "Imperial correction." One name hit too close: her former tutor and confidant, secretly aligned with a rebel cell.
Arani made her choice.
She stole the data, sabotaged her escort’s shuttle, and disappeared into Coronet City's industrial sprawl.
Her first year on the run taught her everything the Senate never did.
While working a job for a Pyke-backed smuggling outfit, Arani was caught in a double-cross on Ord Mantell. She and her crew were ambushed in a scrapyard by bounty hunters hoping to sell her back to Imperial Intelligence. During the fight, one of them tried to subdue her by grabbing her montrals—sensitive and vital to a Togruta’s perception of space and motion. When she resisted, he cut the lower portion of her right montral clean off with a vibroblade.
She barely survived the skirmish. The wound nearly killed her from blood loss, and the trauma altered her natural echolocation forever. But she crawled from the wreckage with fire in her eyes—and her blaster in hand.
Now, the lower half of her right montral is missing, leaving it visibly a few inches shorter than the other. Rather than hide it, Arani wears it like a war medal. It’s often adorned with a single gold cuff, a symbol of survival—and defiance.
In the underworld, Arani forged a new identity: Velvet — a velvet-voiced smuggler with a sharp tongue, a heavy blaster, and no patience for loyalty without reason. Her Core World polish makes her a natural at infiltrating noble circles, while her streetwise instincts keep her alive in the alleys and black markets of the Mid and Outer Rim.
Motivation
Her asymmetrical montrals make her instantly recognizable; people often whisper stories about the blade that took it—or the one she used to get even.
She resents anyone who underestimates her because of her past as a “diplomatic pet,” but sometimes overcompensates by pushing people away.
She still has the encrypted data chip from her father’s files, and it may hold the key to an underground rebel network—or Imperial blackmail operations.
