Del was born Delanoni Bachara Vao, to Grocinin Bachara Vao and Alorias Vao. Grocinin and Alorias were both politicians on Pantora. As the republic fell and the empire rose, they were some of the many leaders on Pantora fighting for the old ways of the republic to be upheld and for a resistance against the empire.
Del being about 7 at the time didn't much care what happened either way. Already a free spirit Del spent much of his youth up to no good. Often playing the snowy marshes with the neighbor children. His neighbors were also politicians and so he would mingle with their children. These neighbors though weren't necessarily in the same camp as Del's Republican parents. Del would often be found at Rional Desorante's house, Rion being his best friend. The Desorantes though were Expansionist, hoping to secure the freedom of Pantora via collaborating with pirates and spice runners.
As such all sorts of people would be found meeting with the Desorantes. Around the time Del was 14 he and Rion were wandering the halls of the Desorante mansion when they came across the group of pirates lounging in a sitting room. They were in the employ of a powerful spice runner by the name of Hondo Ohnaka, who was meeting with Rion's parents.
Being reckless and adventurous 14 year olds, Del and Rion went to say hello.
The Pirates told the boys all sorts of sordid adventures about piracy, spice, and women. It was there that Del was first introduced to sabacc and wonderful games of chance. Del took to gambling like a fish to water. He was a natural, the pirates at first happy to fleece a couple novices, were soon bemused by their losses.
Over the years Desorantes continued to partner with the pirates and mecerenaries and Del continued to build a rapport with them. Their stories and tales feeding dangerously into Del's wanderlust and his gambling habits.
Del's free time was soon spent cavorting, gambling, and just being a general party rebel about town. His parents weren't quite as pleased with his behavior as Del was.

Addiction: Del Vao is an incredibly talented gambler, but a degenerate one none the less. He wins big and will do his best to lose it all as fast as he can. Not on intentionally, he just can't get enough of the high of winning a bet, winning anything really. He'll bet on anything you let him, cards, dice, races, odds of survival. He'll turn anything and everything into a bet, for good or ill... mainly ill.
This tendency to bet has led Del to some rather undesirable people and even more undesirable debts.
Debt: Del has indebted himself to a very nasty crime lord. Del is an honest gambler, doesn't cheat. Makes winning a little harder, but a person's got to have some honor right?
Well crime lords don't really believe in honor in cards, and so Del got swindled, robbed, and cheated out of a big ol' pot. A pot where he had put up collateral he didn't actually have.
To save his hide, Del borrowed money from a guy he knew, who is a lieutenant of an even bigger, badder crime boss. Intending to win it all back in more games of chance later.
Cut to now, Del has two months left to pay his debt and has earned none of it back. Del's reckless gambling nature has lead him to some dangerous and risky endeavors in hopes of not being frozen in carbonite, tortured, enslaved, or straight up murdered.
