Background
Zug-Zug was raised among the enslaved. His real name was forever lost to him, replaced with the derogatory Mirial word for slave, or “one without tattoos.” An enslaved Mirialan would never receive tattoos as their status implied that they would never accomplish great deeds or tasks. As a result, Zug-Zug lived many years without tattoos. Upon being discovered as a force sensitive, Zug-Zug was quickly bought by the Jedi Order. Despite many requests that he take a new name, Zug-Zug kept the name as a reminder of the family whose faces were all but warm blurs in his memories.
As a Padawan, Zug-Zug struggled to reconcile the circumstances of his upbringing with the teachings of the Jedi. While Jedi scripture warned against emotion and passion, Zug-Zug believed that the more detached the Jedi became from the galaxy, struggling around them, the less effectively they would be able to serve and uphold justice. After an incident resulting in the death of Hutt slavers, the Jedi Counsel determined that Zug-Zug should be exiled for surrendering to passion and killing the slavers without provocation. Despite arguing that dismantling the galactic slave trade was well within an Executioner’s jurisdiction, the Counsel saw only the impassioned ravings of a dangerous ex-slave.
In exile, he resented the use of active force abilities because he felt that they fueled the worldly detachment of the Jedi, which he considered hypocritical. He instead preferred the visceral, grounding struggle of blades and blasters. Though he considered the lightsaber the ultimate weapon. Its blade, somehow ephemeral yet material. Its creation is somehow deeply personal though ultimately a tool of death. Zug-Zug’s exile allowed him to travel across the galaxy and everywhere he found slavery, he found people starved of justice. He concluded that the vicious slave trade and those who benefit from it had to be destoryed to prevent incalculable future vicitims from fall prey to the institution. Exile taught Zug-Zug that justice and order were rarely the same thing and that dispassionate justice was all but apathetic.
Upon learning about the fall of the Jedi Order and the death of his estranged master, Karin Sa’ren, Zug-Zug mourned for the misguided Order that raised him. After this great loss passed over him, he knew that now, more than ever, the most vulnerable populations in the galaxy would find themselves victims of Imperial slavery and that nothing stood between them. He made a promise to the galaxy, knowing full-well what life he could have lived, had he not been force-sensitive. He promised to hunt down and eliminate every slaver and collaborator that he could. Each dead slaver would earn him a new tattoo, for he knew that killing these people was a great deed.
