Raised on Malastare, Gonban spent much of his life on planetary transports with his mother. She had been the inheritor of the family business before the rise of the empire. With the empire taking control of the planet, his mother had to take charge, personally, of most of the transports moving fuel. The pay was nowhere near as good as it had been before the empire became their sole contract, with examples made of some of the transport companies it was clear that the empire did not tolerate mistakes or delays.

His father was a rare sight for young Gonban. While his mother focused on the planetary side of transport, his father took to the stars. His father lived a much more dangerous existence. Usually working in tandem with his mother, Gonban's father moved supplies wherever the empire directed.

During his adolescence, his mother took ill and his father decided that it would be best to take Gonban on board his ship. This was where Gonban discovered his love of space travel. He took to it like a fish takes to water. His father fostered this, and taught him the arts of piloting, astrologistics, and gunning. It was during one of these lessons that the ship was hailed and boarded by empire soldiers. The ship had been tagged by empire customs officials as a potential smuggler. Unfortunately for Gonban, they were smuggling fuel. Worse, they were smuggling it to the rebellion.

Gonban hid himself while the soldiers swept the ship, gathering the crew and arresting them. The soldiers began towing the ship while unaware of the young Dug hiding aboard the ship. Using his, admittedly limited knowledge of piloting this ship, Gonban took the controls and broke away from the soldiers. He was ultimately apprehended, but not after a not insignificant chase. A number of the soldiers wanted to kill the young pilot, but the commander stayed their hands. He saw potential in Gonban.

A deal was struck with Gonban and his father. Gonban would avoid jail time for smuggling and resisting arrest, and his father would only have to serve time for smuggling rather than be executed for treason, if Gonban would enlist in the empire's pilot's academy.

There his skills were honed, and he was brought into the empire's military proper.

Gonban sees every encounter in space a challenge. Less so as a challenge for the Empire, but for him. There is the added benefit of the accolades that come with destroying enemy craft while flying, but he'd do it for free so long as he can keep on flying. Just don't tell his boss that.
