Background
Gem mines have low ceilings for high hopes.
-Common Saying among the Offshoots
They always knew they were being hunted. The Arkanian Dominion doesn’t forget how close it came to destruction. And an ego such as the Dominions doesn’t forget the slight of needing the aid of the Republic, or the Jedi. When the final blow fell and the Renegades final strong hold was breached, few made it to the last ships. Those that didn’t were rounded up and executed. The leaders of the Dominion swore to bring the remaining renegades to justice.
They hired bounty hunters. They bred soldiers to seek and search. They even reprogrammed some of the cyborgs who had valiantly fought against the Dominion to search tirelessly for those that escaped. The master stroke of engineering was the plague they released. Harmless to the masses of every world, it was specifically targeted to the familial lines of the Arkanians that fled and any Offshoot on that planet.
The cyborgs were instructed to release it as they travelled. It was designed to be amazingly contagious from Arkanian to Arkanian and would render any who caught it blind within hours, weak within days, and Paralyzed within months. Any who caught it knew of the fate that awaited them, as the only cure was from the very hands that would remove their heads. So when the lights started dimming they tended to end things quickly. The fear of catching it drove the escapees apart.
Fearing they would kill a loved one they avoided all of their own kind, those that didn’t and stumbled onto a cyborg, thinking them a long-lost ally soon paid for their hope with their lives; and the lives of their families. The isolation set in. Silandrias Archon one of the few scientists that stood with the Renegades and Zandreas Soras, last marine of his battalion sworn to protect her, left their friends and loves ones and the life they knew behind. And sought refuge in a place as far removed from the frigid tundra’s and bubble cities of Arkania as they could, a place that would be inhospitable to any Arkanian, Corellia. This far from Arkania an Arkanian and an Offshoot blended in as well as anywhere. Zandreas, being of the Sephi breed could have been one of any number of species. The years past, their relationship grew. Silandrias started a clinic to heal the dismal underbelly of Coronet City. Zandreas took up with the Corellian Security Force. They married, they conceived.
While walking his beat Zandreas stumbled upon a group of Devaronians ripping apart a young man. They were trying to harvest his cybernetics as they would fetch a high price on the black market. Zandreas intervened and upon driving them away from their victim, checked the young man. And looked into the eyes of his killer. Acting upon compulsion, the cyborg trigged the gas that released the Renegade Flu. Zandreas would have ended his life right there, but he knew his pregnant wife would search for him. So he sent her a holo, saying good bye. Silandrias refused to allow him the expediency of the blaster and swore she could find a cure. It was six months before Zandreas died. Silandrias working to her husbands last breath. In the desperation of his last days Silandrias failed to seal Zandreas isolation chamber properly and was contaminated.
The Arkanians, in their arrogance never considered the possibility of a full Blooded Arkanian being sullied by carrying the seed of an Offshoot. The plague progressed in, odd ways. She lost site in one eye, her hands ached, but she kept living, kept going. She gave birth to a son who came out so quickly her nurse called him Dash.
Dash Soras seemed to be healthy as any of the Selphi Line. 5 fingers on each hand, pointed ears, but his white eyes had a feline pupil to them. As the months went by Silandrias noticed that Dash’s eyes would slightly change color as his mood changed. As he grew the color change grew more pronounced until when he was twelve his eyes would glow in the darkness. Dash had planned to follow in his father’s footsteps and join the CSF. But when his mother died of a Blue Shadow Virus outbreak in the slums, Dash’s life took another turn. He took to the streets. He stole to eat, he fought to live. He learned that always being outnumbered meant that it was best to be unseen and to strike when he had all the advantages. The slums begin to tell the tale of the Red Eyes in the Darkness. If you see the Red Eyes you’re already dead.
But Dash grew, he learned. He picked up languages off the streets. He stole Swoop bikes and sold them for enough money to rent a room for a week. He kept to the shadows that became his home. For 4 years he worked the streets until he stole a swoop from the wrong gang and had to flee to the outskirts of Bela Vistal. He sought sanctuary in a Teras Kasi monastery. He was told that they would guard him, and house him if he joined their number. He swore to uphold their values as long as they protected him from the swoopers that wanted his blood. In the monastery he learned to brawl. He learned the Blade. They taught him to fight. They taught him to control his rage and they furthered his understanding of the power of silence. He learned to shoot hunting for meat for the Monastery. He learned to be at peace for the first time in his life. After 5 years of living in the Teras Kasi Monastery the Empire came. Storm troopers raided his home thinking it a haven for Jedi. They fought; the troopers won. Dash and two other monks fled to the transport ship the Monastery had used as a runner and they took to the stars.
Work came slowly, the three survivors learned hard lessons. Astinoes died in a Sabbacc misunderstanding. Pellios died to a knife brawl over a woman. Dash took to the work he new best. Striking from the shadows, taking what was valuable selling it to those who wanted it. If you ask around the right circles about what it means if you see glowing red eyes in the darkness, the smart ones will finish their drinks and leave. The rest will tell you it means you’re very likely short for the world.
