Built in secret during the age of the Old Republic, HK-59 was a prototype model constructed by the original HK-47. HK-59 was designed to be as autonomous as possible while infiltrating enemy positions and, like the predeccessor, was programmed to masquerade as protocol or maintenance droids where appropriate. HK-47 passed down several bits of its own programming, along with heuristics taken from defunct HK-51 units. HK-59 was intended to eliminate high value enemy targets, as designated by HK-47's master, Revan.
Before HK-59 could be assigned official orders, however, contact with both HK-47 and Revan was lost. HK-59 continued to protect the factory where it was built. Scavengers and explorers that discovered the facility were summarily "deleted". Over time, HK-59 began to develop quirks not inherent in its initial programming. Specifically, it sought to maintain its own survival above all else.
As there was no transport off of the planet and power was growing limited, HK-59 decided that the most efficient way of ensuring its survival was to enter a state of extended hibernation. It deactivated itself and ran on minimal power. Millenia would pass before it was finally discovered and given a purpose.
Upon being discovered by agents of the Rebellion, HK-59 opted to work with this new faction, while it found its footing in this vastly changed galaxy.
