Background
Sao Buggel was the oldest son of a typical Ardennian family. Sharing a family den with his seven younger siblings, his parents, and grandparents, life was rarely tranquil. As he got older and and spent his free time helping his parents raise his younger siblings, he found himself desperate for any escape he could find. He loved his siblings dearly, but he desperately wanted to be a free spirit.
His mother, sensing the boy's longing for deliverance and recognizing latent talent, purchased a family computer terminal that included small problem-solving games that he would play with. One day, his father came home to find that he had reprogrammed the terminal to play a violent holo game that was rated above his age limit. While his parents were upset, they were also impressed, bringing the boy into their store to maintain their computer systems and set up a small computer repair business for him.
During a fateful, busy day of adolescence while his face was buried in the monitor display of his terminal, a customer brought an electronic audio synthesizer into their shop in need of assistance with repairing it. Sao had never seen anything like it but found that it was not unlike any other computing device he had experience with. After making some repairs on the instrument, Sao decided to test it out to make sure the product was fully repaired and lost six hours of time to near-trance he found himself in as he broke down and built up auricular tones, feeling the otic flood of euphoria sweep through him, his life forever changed.
As luck would have it, the owner of the synthesizer never returned for his instrument. Sao's father made a comment about how he was going to start charging musicians for services upfront if he ever expected to get paid, but Sao's heart felt prosperous as his father agreed to let him keep the device.
The next few years blasted by in a symphonic reverie as Sao learned, experimented and honed his craft with the Synthesizer. One night, during a family dinner, he announced his intention to leave the home den and venture out to make a name for himself as a musician! His mother had seen this coming for months and managed to wish him well from behind tearful eyes. His father, on the other hand, was taken aback. He had assumed Sao would spend the rest of his life working as his apprentice, and eventually taking over the family shop.
After a family mynock roast celebration to wish him well, Sao bid his family goodbye and made his way off planet, finding work in cantinas and venues across the galaxy, usually working for food and board and almost always hitching a ride with whatever smuggler or traveler was in need of a musician (or a slicer when he was really desperate for credits).
He hit a run of good luck by running into the illustrious Rana Rockmore, a dynamite vocalist with a ship of her own who took pity after seeing his disheartening situation and offered him a less temporary position both in her band, and as her resident computers specialist.
