Background
As a child, Mayless heard of the terrible suffering and privation experienced by those who lived without the benefit of the heated domes she and her family enjoyed. Determined to try to make their lives better, Mayless decided to become a physician who could minister to those she had been taught from a young age were less fortunate than she.
Once free of medical training, she ventured into the wilds and received an education of an entirely different sort, but no less valuable. Many of the fictions she'd learned about the people who lived outside the domes were washed away, but one thing remained true: they needed doctors, and for years she was glad to be of service. She grew roots down into the community and got to know its people over years.
A bodyguard to a wealthy client whose shuttle had crashed appeared at her clinic door one day, demanding she treat his client and taking her elderly assistant, Jehk Kirlett, hostage as collateral. As requested, Mayless treated the client's injuries, but the bodyguard critically wounded Jehk to prevent anyone from pursuing them as they retreated back toward the nearest dome.
Mayless could not save him. She developed a drug addiction and a need for revenge, both impossible to satisfy in the relative wilderness outside the domes.
She returned to her former civilization and took work as a private physician, using her wages to pay for both the information that would lead her to the bodyguard and the medication to artificially extend her patience.

Above all else, Mayless is interested in vengeance against the bodyguard who killed Jehk. Slightly beneath, she seeks to fund her addiction.
