Gawain Buwanni is a minor nobleman of the knight caste from the Tapani Sector from the House Barnaba. He was already a student of the sword even then. He had killed another young lord in a vibrosword fight, and though it was in self-defense, Gawain had to except exile to avoid a bloody feud that could have sundered his entire house.

During his travels, he encountered an old alien whom he had been just a beggar was being accosted by a swoop gang. It quickly became apparent that he had bit of more than he could chew, but as he was preparing to go down fighting with his trusty vibrosword in hand, the old beggar pounced with a blazing lightsaber and the protected became the protector.

After some negotiation on Gawain's part, the old man agreed to start his studies as a Jedi in the Shii-Cho tradition; however, before the training got very far, his instructor was captured by the Inquisitor's. Gawain was prepared to make haste, but a command from his instructors entered his mind telling him to run and prepare to fight for another day. Gawain reluctantly did what was commanded. Fortunately, the campaign ship was in dock and Gawain was able to convince the ship's captain to take him on as a cargo master which had has been doing for about a year before the start of the campaign.
