Elevator pitch: Former guerilla fighter for Rebel-adjacent Separatists. Disillusionment from the New Republic, being more of the same, and the Outer Rim still being worth little to central powers; leads him to having nothing but his skills in combat. Did a stint as a bounty hunter, was captured and tortured, escaped with a pirate, joined a mercenary company. Looking to clear his debts and start clean.
Obligation and Nemesis: Hunted by the crime lord, Suyon Tadat. Late in his bounty hunting career, Jarn took a bounty on a rising problem in the area. A pirate and degenerate, he took the bounty looking for a massive payday. From his time working with Separatists black ops, he figured the best way to go about this was to kill his right hand man, cause instability in his operations, and kill the target in the ensuing confusion.
Fellow bounty hunter (and future fellow Lancer), Rhugo Garo, was also after the bounty. The two came into conflict over collecting, and their fighting allowed Tadat to capture and torture them both. Months of imprisonment, torture, and blood sports caused him to lose what little hate he had for the Empire or love for the Rebellion - he no longer existed in a world of organizations and ideals. There was only survival.
Working with Garo (a former Imperial, in a sense of what the galaxy could only call poetic irony), the two left the past behind and worked together to escape Suyon's stronghold. The affront of the two escaping has earned them the ire of the crime lord, and a substantial bounty has been placed on his head.
After aiding Kendar "Silvereye" in disposing of an old rival who snitched on Trident squad, things turned sour; the ensuing fight led to Jarn and and the crew getting into a fight at Lejo's Landing (which is a big no no). Jarn killed the Houk dockmaster, an imposing fixture of the black market, this has ensured Lejo putting a price on Trident squad and growing Jarn's reputation as a fearsome murderer and making him a more appealing target for bounty hunters.
Fear: Imprisonment, after being held like an animal, tortured and stripped of dignity, Jarn will never allow himself to be taken alive again. This has aided him in his Alpha squadron work, his ferocity in combat and willingness to throw himself into the worst of it, he will fight until only one is left standing.
Ideology: You can only rely on yourself. For all the Lancers, the Rebels, the Empire, the New Republic, for all those who define themselves by their faction; at the end of the day, you are responsible for yourself. While this slightly selfish attitude hasn't helped him in the Lancers, he knows well enough to obey orders and keep his head down. While he is thankful for the opportunities the Lancers have given him, they are a job, not a family.
Update: After several life or death missions with Trident squad, he has begun treating them like friends, the loss of Meep'Muh, was a stronger blow to him than he would've thought, and the anger he felt from accusations from Trintis cemented he actually does give a damn about the squad.
Relationships: Few. Aside from the Lancers, Jarn doesn't spend much time with people. He will join them for drinks, eat in the mess hall, and fight alongside them; but he isn't emotionally there for them. Rhugo is an oddity, the closest person in the Lancers he has to a friend, also part of the reason for his imprisonment. He has a healthy respect for him, and wouldn't mind a "friendly" contest one day to see who would've captured Tadat.
The pirate Jino Desh, is a fairweather ally; after the escape from Tadat's clutches left Rhugo and Jarn with few options on the backwater ice planet, Desh was willing to aid them to put a thorn in the side of his rival pirate. Jarn literally owes him his life, and knows Jino is well within his rights to call on him for a favor.
Update: After Desh attempted to cash in his favor, Jarn realized that he did not want to return to a life of pointless killing, he told Desh that he would assist in one last heist but it had to be done clean. When the pirate unsurprisingly pulled blasters on innocent people, Jarn put him down and let him know that if he ever got out of prison and tried to hurt him or his allies, Jarn would unleash a level of brutality on him that the Sith would whisper fearfully of.
Vice: Jarn likes to drink, fight, and tinker with his gear. He is fond of various ways to make money quick: bounty hunting, betting on fights and races, and isn't above thuggery if he's starving. The discipline of the Lancers has reigned some of this in, and Jarn has managed to keep his flaws under control.
Update: After returning home to Xagobah, Jarn marched through the jungle during a particularly bad season of spores and humidity - this has convinced him to stop smoking Death Sticks.
Motivation
Freedom, and the credits to keep it.
Becoming more than a killer: building and crafting give Jarn a sense of accomplishment.
Purpose: Jarn helped the Rebels for survival, Bounty Hunting for credits, and the Lancers for safety; maybe all he'll be is muscle for hire...but maybe he can be something for himself.
