Background
Born on Randon to a low-class family in 19 BBY, Lorrin Ryser was a bookish and introverted child who gained an early fascination in history, thanks to the abundance of museums and libraries near his home. Studying the old holos of the Clone Wars and the various galactic conflicts that preceded it was a hobby that quickly became a passion.
Wanting nothing more than to make a living as a historian, he sadly lacked the finances to attend a proper university, and with both of his parents having passed away, as a young adult he enlisted in the Randon Space Fleet's Officer Academy. While an unenthusiastic student at best, his early studies gave him a sizable lead over others in simulated combat, and it was his rating there that allowed him to graduate as an Ensign a year after the Battle of Yavin.
Two years into the service, Randon was raided by a sizable pirate task force - with the majority of the fleet called away, Ensign Ryser took command and routed them with minimal losses. Regardless, he suspected more lay at the heart of this affair, and it was true - in spite of his success, the Imperial Navy soon issued a proclamation folding the Randon Space Fleet into their direct control.
Dissension in the local government had military leaders order the launch of the fleet to engage the Imperials, before the civilian leaders countermanded it with a declaration of surrender. Rather than use his services in the Empire's name, Lorrin made the hefty decision to go rogue, and his ship deserted, jumping to lightspeed and arriving in the bordering sector Lantilles, where recent gains against the Empire had been made.
Thus, Lorrin Ryser now finds himself an officer in the Alliance Fleet's Sector Force Lantilles. While far from what he ever wanted for himself, there's little he can do to walk back that choice.
Motivation
Peace/Retirement:
War is the least desirable state to exist in - a just war only slightly less so. Directly, brutally aware that thousands of people can die on either side each time an order is given, Lorrin would like nothing more than to wash his hands of the whole affair as soon as possible. He's no ideological crusader against the Empire, and indeed never wished to become a soldier in the first place - should Palpatine be overthrown, he'll gladly retire before the age of 30.
That being said, his sense of justice and disgust toward cruelty and tyranny, stemming from his historical research into the excesses of past governments, outweigh his peaceable nature. He believes in the cause of the Rebellion, no matter how he grouses about his fate as an outlaw. None of his reluctance hampers his performance, at the very least.
Duties
Loss Preventation
War is hell, and any ways in which Lorrin can lessen that, he sees it as his personal duty to do so. Even from a practical standpoint, the Rebellion cannot afford to take anywhere near the losses of the imperials. He will do everything he can to accomplish his mission with the fewest lives lost for the Alliance.
