Born into a family of merchants, Kalo spent much of his early life helping his parents run their small trading business. His parents, both skilled in negotiation and commerce, taught him the value of hard work and independence.

As the Empire expanded its control, it imposed harsh regulations and heavy taxes on trade routes. The Haru family's business suffered greatly under the weight of Imperial oppression, with constant inspections, bribes, and arbitrary confiscations.
