Background

Jonzuub Polotar was one of the few Lasat to escape the destruction of his homeworld. He was just entering adulthood when the Empire invaded, off planet piloting a freighter for his Uncle’s shipping business. After the job had been completed, he was unable to return to his homeworld due to Imperial interference. Falling into a brief time of despair, Jonzuub found himself in hiding, fearful of the Empire.

As time went on and Jonzuub's hope began to wane, word reached his ears of a Rebel cell in the Lothal area involving a Lasat. Jonzuub took great care to operate through underground channels in order to get access to banned holonet and shadownet recordings. In these recordings, the group known as the Spectres struck out against the Empire, time and time again. At the heart of this crew was a Lasat honor guard, distinguished by his AB-75 bo rifle. Jonzuub watched as this crew not only attacked the Empire, but defended those in need as well. Jonzuub checked the date on the recordings, some of the oldest were as old as 4 years! In the age of the Galactic Empire, the odds of a Rebel cell surviving that long were slim, but Jonzuub was not swayed. He had come to depend on these recordings, finding that they were now his only source of hope. Over the next few weeks, Jonzuub did everything he could to make his way to the Lothal system, and upon arrival discovered what he believed to be an impossibility: absolutely no Imperial presence on the planet! Jonzuub was amazed.

After landing on Lothal, Jonzuub was immediately brought before the interim leadership who identified themselves as friends of the Rebel Alliance. They informed Jonzuub that their boss had heard of his arrival, and luckily for him she was good friends with the Lasat he was looking for. Within a day, a transport shuttle arrived, and he was face to face with the man who had inspired him to try to make a change, Garazeb Orrelios! They spent some time together, Garazeb insisting that Jonzuub refer to him as “Zeb” and they spoke about what their respective lives had been like since the Empire destroyed their home. Jonzuub hung his head in shame as he recounted the years spent in the dark, living a halflife as a hunted animal. Jonzuub could not tell what he was thinking, but Zeb did not show any judgement when Jonzuub looked up with tears in his eyes. Zeb then informed him of something that brought him more hope than all of the holonet recordings combined, the mythical homeworld of his species, Lira San, had been found! Their species was not on the verge of extinction!

As Zeb let this knowledge sink into Jonzuub, the younger Lasat began to cry. He realized that Zeb had told him this to make him feel better, but his thoughts became clouded with fear. If the Empire could take away one homeworld, they could do it to another. Jonzuub was intensely happy that his species would live on, but that did not quench the flame in his heart that burned when he thought of his loved ones that were now gone. Jonzuub gripped his fists in anger and announced his intention to join the Rebel Alliance. Telling Zeb that he was not worthy to set eyes on Lira San until the Empire was destroyed, he insisted that Zeb assist with his enlistment. Zeb eyed him for a long while, before grinning and punching Jonzuub on the arm in agreement.

Jonzuub worked as a mechanic for a while as he was put through basic combat training, logging hours with the Rebellion’s flight sim programs in order to familiarize himself better with their available starships. Eventually, the Rebellion made its first big move with an assault on Scarif in order to get the plans for the new Imperial superweapon, the Death Star. After the ensuing battle became a victory, followed up not too long after with another victory during the Battle of Yavin, the alliance became desperate for pilots. Jonzuub put his name forward, and after displaying some prowess during a test flight for a group of superior officers, he was given the rank Flying Officer and assigned to a newly formed Squadron replacing the recently lost Tierfon Yellow Aces.
