Background
Hek Rendell, a former Imperial mechanic and pilot, current smuggler on the run, and aspiring pulp novelist. Originally called Heclan Rendili, he lived a prosaic and lackluster existence on a backwater Outer Rim planet til he saw his opportunity to get the hell out and joined the Empire. Expecting glory and renown, he instead found himself relegated to a boring existence monkey wrenching on Imperial supply shuttles in the middle of nowhere, filling out paperwork, and generally finding himself just as unfulfilled as he'd always been. So he created Hek Rendell, a fast-shooting, hard drinking, space jockey alter ego, and filled his down time
writing fanciful tales of daring and bravado, since he'd none of it his own life. After a few years, and no success with his novels on the holo-net, he decided he'd had enough of writing (badly) about a life of adventure, and decided to live one instead. Using his small modicum of Imperial responsibility to secure himself a shuttle for a "last minute supply run", he stole a ship and its cargo, hacked the transponder, and lit out for the nearest hive of scum and villainy. He sold the ship and supplies( which he'd promised were weapons and vital supplies) to a local Black Sun gang with more sense than money, then skedaddled on out of the system after buying himself a swanky new ride with his ill gotten gains. As it turned out, the shuttle was full of defective plumbing joints and misprinted Imperial propaganda, his hacked transponder job was completely shoddy, and his brand new ship was a poorly refurbished hunk of junk.
With a bunch of angry Black Sun on his tail and the Empire not far behind, Hek found himself living like the outlaw he'd always wanted to be.
As much fun as that was, it turns out being an outlaw kind of... well, getting shot at, hunted down and just generally being in constant fear for one's life can be kind of a huge bummer, and after a few years of that, Hek had his fill.
Luckily, an old friend had contacts in the Rebellion who were more than willing to take in folks on the Empire's bad side. Now doing dangerous supply runs, slinging a hyrdospanner, and generally fighting the good fight, Hek's started to find some purpose. Being an outlaw with a cause seems like it suits him a lot better.
Not only that, with a little pro-Alliance rewriting, his novels have started to find their niche. Life's good for Hek Rendell; at least, as good as it can be
for an Imperial turncoat with a Black Sun bounty on his head fighting for a ragtag Rebellion.
Motivation
Self Discovery - Hek has an almost uncontrollable urge to explore and discover and adventure; this desire comes from a deep need to figure out who he is and where he fits. The universe is a big place. Especially when you don't even know yourself.
Duties
Morale - Hek was born with a smart remark, as his mother used to say, and his good-natured sarcasm and easy going manner make him a solid addition to pretty much any unit.
