Background

Ilra spent most of her childhood and adolescence in a swamp village on the Aqualish homeplanet Ando where, despite the treaty between the three subspecies of Aqualish, strife and conflict were still prevalent and diplomacy ridiculed. And where short tempers and savage personalities rule, inequality flourishes.

Her people the Quara are treated as pariahs on Ando, excluded and treated like lesser beings by the dominant race. This leads to frequent raids on the villages where the people are captured or killed for sport. Ilra was one of those captured and forced to manual labor, suffering through indignities and injustices throughout her early life. The close-knit community of slaves never gave up hope on a brighter future, which would surely soon come. The work and abhorrent treatment continued, but the hope never died.

The masters, noting a resistant glimmer of hope, (re)discovered a way to exploit it - gladiatoral battles for which the contestants were haphazardly recruited from the workers. Again and again they came to the barracks, picking out whoever was guaranteed to either put up a good fight, or a terrible one.

Meanwhile, Ilra was growing up to be a rambunctious but social teenager who could force her way either with her fists or with her words, preferring to charm her way to extra rations than beat someone for them. After all, violence begets violence. She was in her position because violence and hatred blinded enough people. The young idealist refused to give in to the cycle, intending instead to kill it with kindness. Which made her a perfect target for the arena.

The guards came one morning, informing her of her draft into the fighting pit. Since she refused to fight, she tried to talk her way out of it. And failed. She tried to talk her first opponent down. And failed. She tried to talk the next one down. And failed. One can only take so much failure before one snaps and fights back. So she did, and has smashed, killed and slaughtered her way to the top of first the local, then global, and finally intergalactic fighting leagues. Her manager (which was apparently the new term for owner) has given her a new task, one that was designed to bring her in touch with a more general public, she was hired as a bodyguard for a superstar..
