Background

Born on Mandalore in 48 BBY, he grew up during a very tumultuous time as his clan splintered between the three sides. His parents were on the side of the True Mandalorians, and when the clan splintered, they resettled on Vorpa'ya in 32 BBY.
During the war, his father found a Shistavanen infant, Falmok, who had been orphaned during a pirate attack. They grew up together and became steadfast companions. In 40 BBY, the family was part of a convoy of the remnants of the True Mandalorians, trying to evacuate a settlement threatened by the Death Watch. However, elements of the Death Watch force had split off from the main group and flanked around to attack the comparatively defenseless convoy. Verdel (Darien’s mother) had been in an escort position, but when the battle commenced, she fell back to protect the speeder containing her children. As Darien looked on in horror, she was killed by a missile fired at the speeder when she jumped in front of it to block it and protect her children. From then on, Darien swore to never need protecting and to never allow another of his loved ones to die, no matter the personal cost. He and his father became more emotionally distant from each other as Darien thought that Loreck blamed him for Verdel’s death.
His father taught him the ways of the Mandalorians and trained him in combat until they left Mandalore in 32 BBY, at which point he left to become a bounty hunter. When he returned to visit his family on Vorpa'ya in 27 BBY, he met Kyra Sorenn (a nerf herder's daughter) and they fell in love. They were married in 26 BBY and had a child, Ferrus, in 25 BBY. After his son’s birth, his father approached him and asked if he still blamed him for Verdel’s death. Darien was shocked, always believing that Loreck blamed him. The two reconciled and then shortly thereafter, Darien returned to space to continue work as a bounty hunter, teaming up with Falmok Vanth (his Shistavanen blood-brother) and two other Mandalorians in the lead up to the Clone Wars. In 22 BBY his father was killed in the Death Watch bombing of a monument in Sundari, devastating Darien.
