Rala grew up on the Twi’lek home planet of Ryloth with parents who ran an artists’ collective, and lived an extremely happy childhood among sculptors, acrobats, painters, poets, and the like. After the Empire was founded, her parents were arrested for their connections with revolutionary and Rala began a life with rebels and pirates. She owes Cham Syndulla of Ryloth a ship, and also left Saw Gerrera’s Partisans on bad terms with the group, which could have repercussions if she runs into any lingering Partisans in the New Republic.

Rala is part of the Fortuna family, and thus connected to Jabba the Hutt's majordomo Bib Fortuna (whom she hates) but also Beezer Fortuna, a revolutionary who ran with Saw Gerrera and died on Jedha. After Beezer's death, she dropped the Fortuna name and refers to herself now as only Rala of Ryloth.

As a Twi'lek, Rala saw many of her childhood friends sold into slavery and her planet torn asunder by the Separatists and then the Empire. The fact that a relative of hers works with Jabba the Hutt, a notorious slave owner, is reprehensible to her and she is obsessed with the idea of killing him. As she has not had the chance, she stokes the fire of her rage by liberating slaves of any race when she can, and taking bounty offers to kill slave owners and/or slave traders.
