Background
Hailing from a fairly simple Mid Rim world from a fairly simple family, Vandalin grew up during the height of the Clone Wars. His childhood was filled with romanticized holos of Jedi Knights leading Clone forces against the dreaded Separatists. While he had never met a Jedi and in fact didn't believe that the Jedi had ever even visited his unassuming world, he was raised with the belief that the Jedi were the guardians of peace and justice for the galaxy and that they secured those things with their strength, primarily in the use of their iconic weapons, the lightsaber.
His favorite holos had daring lightsaber battles and showcased the awesome power of the Jedi Knights of the Order. Like most kids his age, he dreamed of being a Jedi himself and that dream never really went away. But one day, he saw those dreams tempered and dashed when it was discovered the the Jedi had been planning to take control of the Republic following the end of the war. Like many his age, he saw his admiration quickly turn to hatred at how the Jedi had betrayed them, buying into the Empire's propaganda.
This did nothing to stop his desire to help promote peace in the galaxy and it became even more clear to him in the wake of the fall of the Jedi that power was what was needed to secure the galaxy and bring peace to the Empire. This belief came in the form of a short fuse and a penchant for getting into fights at the drop of a hat. Fighting was his way of trying to fix things he saw wrong with the world. It started off innocently enough and in general he seemed to mostly focus his energy on bullies. But it wasn't long before this method made him a bully himself. As he grew older, this behavior became less and less acceptable among his people and he soon found himself with no where that he was still welcome.
Taking his strength to the rest of the galaxy, Vandalin left his home and became a mercenary, selling his strength to the highest bidder, telling himself that what he was doing was helping bring the galaxy closer to peace. His desire to fight and use his strength in this way became an addiction, as he desired to prove his strength and make his mark on more of the galaxy. He began to spend his free time fighting in arenas, making a name for himself as a fearsome opponent, cowing the majority of his opponents with a single glance before eliminating them in a single blow. During one of these bouts, he won an ancient artifact, a sword said to have once been used by the Jedi of old, which rekindled old feelings he had for them.
Deep down, he still desired to be a guardian of peace and justice and he felt like he wasn't sure who he was anymore. He trained in use with the weapon diligently, finding it to be a weapon that felt almost natural in his hands. But his hunger for fights continues to call for him and it must be sated.
