Background
Janica Halcyon was born on Corellia in 17 BBY, and grew up in the early years of the resistance to the Empire. The daughter of a dockworker and a shipbuilder for the Corellian Engineering Corporation, Janica was involved in radical politics at a young age as her parents were both prominent figures in Coronet City's trade union movement. Janica's father was murdered by strikebreakers during the shipyard strike of 12 BBY, and her family struggled to make ends meet, with Janica entering the workforce by lying about her age in an effort to support her mother and brothers. Further radicalized by the broadcasts of underground Senator Garm Bel Iblis and rogue rebel Saw Gerrera, Janica enrolled in Corellia's Imperial Academy to learn to fight and fly, the better to use those skills against the Empire. She was quickly drummed out of the program due to her parents' politics - but not before she'd outflown everyone in her class. She resolved to leave Corellia and entreated her best friend Kara Vigil - whom Janica had begun to realize romantic feelings for - to leave with her. Kara refused, opting to stay in the Academy and serve in the Imperial Navy, leading to a bitter and acrimonious split.
Soon after, Janica joined the Rebellion and became a decorated pilot, flying in engagements such as the Battle of Devaron, where she engaged in an inconclusive dogfight with Kara, now a TIE Fighter pilot. Janica also flew in battles ranging from Manaan to Endor, rising through the ranks to earn an officer's commission at the rank of Lieutenant. She was a terror in a U-Wing or a Y-Wing flying in Green Squadron with other Corellian pilots, earning the nickname "Sprite" for her alacrity and skill at evasive action. During the Siege of Corellia, Janica resigned from the New Republic Navy along with other members of her squadron, and became a part of the reorganized Rogue Squadron, flying her beloved green U-Wing. She earned her bloodstripes and a medal in breaking the siege, and earned herself a promotion to Commander after returning to the fold.
Janica eventually became jaded with the ideological drift of the Rebellion and New Republic - particularly during the events of the Siege of Corellia - and resigned her commission soon after the Liberation of Coruscant. Lacking a pension, drifted into cargo hauling and grey-market smuggling, operating under the business name Halcyon Transport Solutions, LLC. She now pilots the YZ-775 medium transport the Rambler, which she has retrofitted with a hangar to hold her old U-Wing (which she "forgot" to return to the Republic upon resigning her commission) along with her astromech droid R6-GB.
Janica uses her mother's maiden name, rather than her father's name, as her mother always told her that her family was "special," though never went into detail.
Motivation
Political - Invested in radical politics from a young age, Janica grew up in the struggle for the rights of the oppressed, and her parents told her stories of how hard times could be under the Republic as well. Janica believes that it is not enough to restore the Republic, and that something new and better must arise from the ashes of the Empire. She has become extremely jaded with the New Republic's failure to do so.
Obligations
Favor - Janica owes a favor to the Hutt Koona on Nubia, who provided a good amount of capital for her to start her business and acquire her ship in exchange for a favor to be called in later.
