Background
Ak-bar's clan were devout Followers of Quay, and ancient religion which has seen its numbers decline in recent years.
Before being old enough to be of any servie to the Hutts, Ak-bar asked his Quay for guidance about Life, the Universe, and Everything. He interpreted the Quay's response (Better not tell you now)), as a sign that he needed to experience more of the galaxy before reaching true enlightenment. So Ak-bar found the perfect ship to stow away on (Signs point to yes).
The ship eventually made its way to Jedha, where Ak-bar learned of the Guardians of the Whills. Ak-bar has come to realize the the Force is just one aspect of the great god Quay (It is decidedly so) and has dedicated his life to its teachings and spreading the wisdom across the galaxy as Quay dictates (Yes, definitely)....
