Background
Mazelina grew up on the planet Mirial, a cold, dry and despondent world, among her deeply religious people. Her tribe were mainly miners in the Ulonda Mountains, a hardy people with deep respect for Mirialan religion. Unlike many Miralian women, she was expected to chip in with manual labour to help her tribe and family. Mazelina grew up strong and tough.
Though Mirialans have a small military tradition, Mazelina was selected for military service as she was stronger and braver than most her age - it was seen as her fate, an important part of Mirialan religion. The strongest were selected from each of the tribes.
Mazelina excelled in the Mirialan militia and was invited to train to become part of the Mirialan special forces. The training was difficult and competitive, and Mazelina found herself under pressure to prove herself as the only woman involved. Before training could finish, Mirial was attacked remnants of the Trade Federation who did not accept being folded into the Empire. As the cadets were stationed nearby, they were inducted into the special forces at short notice and sent into action.
Mazelina was promoted on the spot to Sergeant and given a squad to command. Feeling the pressure to prove herself, Mazelina pushed her squad to the front, in the vanguard, to attack the Neimoidian troopers and combat droids at close quarters. This action pulled her squad out of the support of the rest of the platoon, and, though they surprised the Trade Federation remnant and took an important position, they were quickly overwhelmed by enemy reinforcements.
Mazelina's entire squad of 9 Mirialans were slaughtered. She was captured after the Neimoidians decided to take her as a prisoner. Expecting execution or imprisonment, she was instead abandoned as the enemy was forced to retreat as the rest of the Mirialan special forces attacked.
Mirialans display their victories and their mistakes openly on their skin through tattoos. Mazelina was forcibly discharged for her actions and forced to tattoo this shame on her face forever more. She added the names of her dead compatriots onto her collarbones so she would never forget them.
Her family and tribe rejected Mazelina due to her actions, stating that her selfish actions had disrupted the Unity of Mirial. Realising Mirial was no home to her while her shame was so clear to everyone, Mazelina made an oath to learn from her mistakes and change the fate of 9 others in the galaxy to make up for the 9 people she let die. Until she saves the lives of 9 people, she will not be redeemed and not return to her home, or see her family again, nor marry or have children.
Mazelina therefore seeks a group to help. She wants to protect people and prove she is still a capable soldier despite her mistakes. In battle, she reacts quickly and charges in first, taking fire, and protecting others from fire whenever she can. She throws herself into danger without a second thought. The idea of dying for someone else feels like her destiny now.
Unfortunately, the toll of her mistake and her quest for redemption has led Mazelina to seek drugs which help her turn off her brain and her feelings. Her current predilection is for nullicaine, a medical drug.
Mazelina travelled to a nearby refugee space station for those fleeing from Trade Federation Remnant attack and other conflicts in the galaxy. She was lucky to escape the blockade of Mirial, as the Trade Federation took a strong grip on the planet, overwhelming the small Mirialan military.
At the space station, she volunteered to help, seeing it as the perfect place to meet people who needed help. Early on, she met a human working there called Treco Minn who she befriended quickly. She could sense that something was tormenting him inside. Eventually, Treco revealed to her in private that he was sent as an Imperial Agent to destroy the camp as it was seen as a haven for rebels, but he had decided he could not do it and said he had been brainwashed his whole life.
Mazelina decided that Treco, now in mortal danger from his betrayal of the Empire, would be her first of nine lives to save, believing that it was fate they had met. She accompanied Treco Minn as he travelled to the outskirts of the galaxy, away from Imperial eyes.
