Background
Born on Dac fifteen years ago, Loyek was found and brought to the Jedi Academy on Coruscant early in his childhood. His life there was blessedly uneventful, training like so many younglings until one day, the Zabrak Jedi Knight Aepram chose him as padawan. In Loyek, the energetic Aepram felt the potential for a valuable member of the Order, held back by apathy and fear. For while Loyek was a capable warrior and healer both, he was also cautious- constantly worrying about those he cared for, his concern for them holding him back. Where a Jedi must be able to do th right thing instinctively, Loyek would hesitate, weighing his actions and the potential risks to himself and others rather than let the Force be his guide.
It was this mental roadblock which Aepram sought to cure young Loyek of, hoping that in doing so the Mon Calamari would grow into a proper Jedi. Unfortunately, the Zabrak would never find out whether his efforts would pay off. On what was supposed to be a standard rescue mission, Aepram and Loyek were dispatched by the Order to find and retrieve a trio of politicians, who had been abducted by local gangsters. These criminals were known to have contacts among the Seperatists; if the Jedi waited too long before acting, the politicians would no doubt fall into the Seperatists' hands. And so Aepram and Loyek were chosen to deal with the situation, mostly because no other Jedi were available on such short notice.
The mission was a disaster. Resistance was far greater than anticipated, and while the politicians were saved, Aepram was killed buying time for his padawan to lead them to safety. Loyek was eventually reassigned to a new master, but the events of that day haunt him still. It has made the young Mon Calamari even more hesitant to leap to action, believing as he does that proper preparations could have saved his master's life...
