Background
Phon'du was a stowaway on a ship for many years and maintained a friendship with a broken astromech droid who he helped repair by borrowing parts off the ship.
When Phon'du was found out he offered to repair the ship in service of this alleged wrong doing.
On this one particular occasion not so long ago, Phon'du had finished the repairs he could with the parts he had and was left waiting for the captain to return who had been gone for days.
So Phon'du left in the ship with his trusty droid friend to go and get the parts for the captain's ship.
Unbeknownst to him, the captain had reported the ship stolen by creature fitting Phon'du's description.

Motivation
Status - It has always been Phon'du's dream to be the captain of a capitol ship.
Freedom - Phon'du is a free spirit and seeks to go on as many adventures as possible. So having a bounty on his head is definitely going to dampen his chirpy mood.
