Osto lived a rather ordinary life for a Mirialan for much of his young life. From an early age, devotion to his religion, his ancestors and his family was drilled into him -- the importance of measuring cause and effect before he acted, for all things had consequences. His parents repeatedly extolled the exploits of his brothers and sisters; the youngest of nine siblings. "You must be studious, young Osto, for all you need to do is look upon your sister Jelan, and you can see upon her face she graduated top of her class at University." "You must always be brave, little Osto. Do you not see your brother Elian? His valor saved many innocents who were trapped by a horrid syndicate who came to prey upon the Mirialans. His service in the police does our family honor, his deeds tattooed upon his face to be seen by all."
Osto was constantly compared to his siblings, all of whom seemed to excel in whatever they did, from teaching, medicine, service in the police or government. He constantly toiled, and struggled, desperate to make his family proud. However, the pressure constantly proved too much for him. The stress resulted in a failed test. Disapproval caused hesitation, eliminating his school's team from the playoffs. A flippant remark made him lose his cool. He punched a fellow student, getting him expelled, and his first tattoo -- a disgrace to himself, and his family.
It was a hard lesson for Osto to learn, and one his family did not seem fit to forgive -- while outwardly his family remained cordial to him, he could tell they were rapidly beginning to attempt to ignore the 'black sheep' of the family. The pressure his family gave him to exceed began to dissipate -- there could be no surer sign that his loved ones had given up on him. When his second tattoo came, an arrest for petty theft that he committed in a foolish, brash act caused by the stress of being rejected by yet another University, he knew his family had all but abandoned him when he received barely a rebuke. He took this as a sign he had to leave, to find redemption somewhere, somehow.
Taking what little money he had available, still not wanting to take from his family, he left a message for his family promising to make up for his failings, and booked a trip off Mirial, to seek fame, glory, riches -- anything to prove to his family he could live up to the reputation of his siblings. He found himself in the Imperial Auxiliaries in a Combat Engineering battalion, where he spent his days learning how to build and how to destroy structures of all shapes and sizes. Despite his interest in the subject, he rapidly found that Imperial Military life was not for him. His breaking point was when he realized that standard operating procedure for any Outer Rim colony that decided it was going to buck against Imperial Rule was to force the people out of their homes and demolish the settlement and infrastucture.
Seeing no route to fame, riches or glory, Osto resigned as soon as his first tour was over, and headed off into the private sector in the hopes of finding better opportunity there. After bouncing between jobs and companies for a few years, helping build fledgling colonies, Osto found himself upon the planet of Rannon, in the hopes that here, finally, he would meet his destiny.
