Background
Nicoh was a troubled youth with a rebellious streak, who strained to live up to the expectations that come from being a part of the House Inrokini legacy. His disdain for authority caused him to join the Rebel Alliance as a pilot at a young age, if not for their ideals, then at least to make a show of his opposition to his lineage's dealings with the Empire. However, his immaturity also made him susceptible to influence (and credits), and he soon found steady work smuggling rare artifacts off of the very worlds he was supposed to be helping. Roughly two years in, after it became obvious to Nicoh that the Rebels launched an internal investigation into his illegal side hustle, he went AWOL, put a down payment on a YT-1300 light freighter with his last credits, and began smuggling as a full-time career.
Motivation
Nicoh has always struggled with feeling like he fits in. Not a proper Inrokini. Not a proper Rebel. Not a proper Chiss. He is not a loner by nature, but his slippery feelings of identity make it hard to feel like he can form lasting relationships of any kind. He tells himself that he'll figure it out later, that whatever he's doing right now is just for right now. His inclination to buck authority comes from a fear being thought of as incapable or stupid or WRONG. This inclination is also keeping him from personal growth. While it may appear on the surface that Nicoh is money-motivated, he's actually motivated to seek situations where he feels clever or capable. Smuggling is "easy" for him and fills that hole (for now?). As the years keep going, he considers he may be stuck as a smuggler as a career, and this bothers him. His debt to the Pykes is also starting to make him feel gullible, which makes him feel stupid, which in turn will eventually cause him to act out.
Obligations
Nicoh owes a small amount of money to the Pykes, as a loan on his freighter, but his rep with the Pykes is good. They tend to forgive any missed payments especially if it keeps him on the hook to do more work for them. Nicoh is only now starting to consider that the Pykes may see him as somewhat of slave if they can keep extending the interest on his damn ship. He likes the Pykes because they don't terrify him like some of the other families.
Description
Nicoh is likable with a good sense of humor, but has no close friends or confidants. He takes refuge in the things he knows to be true, and can be incurious as a conflict-avoidant reflex. "I'm probably better off not knowing," is the philosophy that drives 95% of Nicoh's in-and-out smuggling jobs. He is not a gambler by nature, and avoids runs that he perceives as too risky or involve too many outside factors. He likes the Rebellion's moxie but has a been-there-done-that attitude that can come across like he's got it allllllll figured out (he does not). Nicoh has pretty much always thought that the Empire is a stupid waste of resources and not realistic about the way the real world works.
