Background
As the clone wars drew to a close the Empire was rapidly expanding their grip on the galaxy, and the mines on Kessel were no exception. Despite its extremely remote and dangerous location past the Akkadese Maelstrom, Kessel was of extreme strategic value, especially if you are looking exert control on the underworld.
The Mining Guild, who operate all the mechanical machinery for the Pike Syndicate on Kessel, were in a sticky situation. The Empire has only one condition under which the mining guild can continue to operate within the mines; unwavering loyalty to the empire.
After begrudgingly swearing allegiance to the Empire, came the bad news. The Empire would begin rapidly replacing their reliable droid fleet on Kessel with organic slave labor. This means the mining guild must decommission or sell off all of their operational droids.
L1-G3 was one of those droids. By this point L1-G3 had been a mechanic on the mines of Kessel for well over a decade. During his time maintaining the mines, he was assigned a mechanical droid assistant, GRE-g. Despite their restraining bolts, they slowly developed a close working relationship, which evolved into a close personal relationship due to the lack of routine memory wipes.
In the Mining Guilds haste to sell off their droids, they never wiped any of their memories. Resulting in a pair of bonded droids who were sold as a lot of 10 droids to a private buyer.
That buyer turned out to be a small group of rebellious freedom fighters based off Jedha, led by the notorious freedom fighter Saw Guerrero. Saw and hisfreedom fighters were constantly jumping from planet to planet, assisting other groups of freedom fighters to assemble and fight against the Empires tyranny.
After almost 20 more years, L1-G3 and GRE-g were considered family members by Saw Gurrera and his tight knit team. While returning to Jedha after procuring a new ship modification, tragedy struck before his eyes.
Through the view screen of the transport he was piloting, what used to be the City of Jedha, was rapidly becoming crater with debris being ejected into the upper atmosphere.
Knowing that Saw was either dead, soon to be dead, or already off planet, L1-G3 immediately set course for an emergency rendezvous point in the next system, and jumped to hyperspace.
After over a month of radio silence, An envoy arrived and collected the droids, who were brought to General Garm Bel Iblis, of the now official Rebel Alliance.
Since then, nearly two years ago, L1-G3 and his companion GRE-g are actively supporting a variety of missions for the Rebel Alliance. Ranging from complex ship and base repairs, to cracking encrypted Imperial communications in the field. If it’s mechanical, or computerized, L1-G3 can fix it.
