Background

Born in 40 BBY, Maqri Relf, a Mon Cal, grew up in reasonable comfort to a successful Zizania grain farmer, and an aquaculture scientist mother in their shallow sea community on Dac.
Maqri (“Max”) entered Mon Calamari Science and Military Academy in 27 BBY. He was joined in his entering class by a then 14 year old Gial Ackbar (already a tactical prodigy, and later Fleet Admiral of the Rebel Alliance) though the two of them had at best, a casual acquaintance.
Max rose quickly through the officer curriculum, and graduated a 1st Lieutenant of Squadron and Aeronautical Science in 24 BBY.
It was in his first official assignment, the famed Medusa squadron, where his destiny was altered forever.
In Medusa squadron, Max narrowly beat out the more veteran Quarren lieutenant, Krek’xn Odl for lead command. At this time, when the Separatist Crisis was still in its nascency, the Quarren and Mon Cal continued joint aquatic and space faring military operations, albeit in a tense relationship. With career aspirations rising, Max found bliss when he met the beautiful Griini Lamnos. Though she was presently a flight officer in his tutelage, she quickly stole his heart.
Henceforth springs the chain of events that would shape Maqri Relf ‘s life forever. He was assigned to lead squadron support on a mission to escort Senator Tikkes on a diplomatic meeting to Kamino. He and Griini nearly missed flight check that morning after a particularly late night together. Flying lead starfighter in standard trident (3 ship) formation, he led the still seething Krek’xn Odl, and Griini Lamnos on what should have been routine escort. The journey to Kamino was uneventful. On their return jump home, however, disaster struck. Senator Tikkes’s Star Cruiser, as well as Odl, and Max’s fighters left hyperspace as calculated. Griini’s craft never arrived. Krek’xn Odl claimed he had picked up a momentary distress signal during their warp transit, but no other ship noted such an SOS. An astromech malfunction was the official cause on Flight Officer Lamnos’s missing in action file, but no wreckage was ever found. Maqri grieved, and lost all drive to continue with Medusa Squadron. He blamed himself for the lack of a proper preflight check that fateful morning. However, he never failed to note the lack of remorse Odl seemed to show in what transpired. The sinister Odl seemed far too joyful for the loss of a squadmate. One day, after a particularly callous remark from Odl, Max snapped, and it took 4 cadets and a Mon Cal MP to pull him off his foe.
Captain Maqri Relf was discharged from Medusa squadron, and in 23 BBY went into self-exile in the Outer Rim intent on his new creed, forged in tragedy…

Other Notes

Mechanics, piloting skill, and having a trustworthy and reliable astromech by his side are important to Max. He is fastidious with his ship maintenance. Second to his lingering PTSD from Griini’s death, Max dreads hyperspace accidents, such as Gravity wells, motivator burnout, or hasty calculation errors. He is vigilant and extremely careful with all things related to flying, and astromech navigation. As such, he has befriended a technically proficient and experienced R-unit (AV-35), who he met in his Outer Rim travels, as a frequent flight companion, and trusts AV-35’s astromech capabilities to the utmost.

Early in Max’s retreat from his home world, he met a fellow Mon Cal, Bobo Punji, in the Chommel Sector (near the Naboo system). Bobo had been a Republic Security officer, often assigned to security detail for Senator Tikkes. Bobo had resigned in disgust after observing Tikkes staff colluding with Separatist agents. Bobo provided Max with clues that there may have been nefarious dealings between the Quarren Senator and Separatist agents on that fateful trip to Kamino, deepening the mystery of Griini’s disappearance. Bobo was understandably empathetic to Max’s story, and offered to stay in touch should he have any additional information to share. He also offered to sell Max one of his old side arms, a TT24 holdout blaster, from his days with Republic Security.

During his campaign searching for clues of the Takobo data pad, Max realized that his piloting skills and quick reflexes also served him well towards pistol-based proficiency. After a number of firefights, Max began to think of himself as something of a Gunslinger, and sought to learn the ways of light ranged combat superiority.
