Background
I grew up on planet RIshi. My parents were both hard workers that did pretty well, but worked long hours and were offworld on a regular basis (usually only one of them at a time). I was the oldest of 2 children, but my sister died from unknown illness, after being sick for years. My parents ran out of money trying to find a cure, but came into some large sums during the last year of trying to cure her. 6 months after her passing, they went missing on a return trip from Mon Calamari.
They were close friends with another family who had a single son slightly older than I. I spent quite a bit of time with them growing up, becoming natural friends with their son, Aric, and they took me in when my parents went missing (I was around 13 or so). I was a bit rebellious and adventurous, and moreso after losing my family. I was never really disrespectful of Aric's parents, but I basically just did my own thing.
Aric was usually the responsible one, with myself being the one more wiling to take risks and push the limits a bit more. We were both pretty smart, doing well in school and getting decent work. Both of us had a knack for computers, and while he used his to make some pretty decent money, I used mine to gather information. Slicing was fun, and knowing things about people and places always felt more valuable to me. Watching all my parents hard earned money disappear taught me money comes and goes. Knowledge and information seems much more reliable forms of currency.....
Unfortunately, obtaining information came with similar risks.
Aric was 22, married, and had a son of his own. His wife, Ryna, was a kind woman that always had a hot meal for me and a spare bed ready. She never asked questions when I came by, out of breath, soaking wet, and hungry. And this was most days of the week. I spent more time with them than in my small 1 room apartment. I didn't like being there by myself unless I was slicing. They were good people and I worked hard to make sure I kept any exposure then might have to my less than above board hobbies at a minimum, even though those activities weren't nefarious.
My slicing had given me a view of the growing force of those wanting to oppose the Empire, and I found such an idea compelling. I had gathered quite a large amount of information about various players on Rishi and those coming in and out, and had used that sparingly to gain favors, pull a few strings, and get information that was beyond my reach.
Unfortunately, someone I had gathered information on found out about it, and didn't take too kindly to it (probably because they had been profiting quite nicely in the employ of the Empire). I had been able to stay one step ahead of them for about 3 weeks, using a few favors and a few bribes to do so. Unknown to me, however, was that this person's resources were a bit more robust than mine, and he had found out my relationship with Aric and his family.
I had a tail that night, which I easily lost as always, long before heading to Aric's house. I came in the back as usual, looking forward to warm meal and playing with little Javin.... but the house was dark, cool, and quiet. And there was a strange odor I wasn't accustomed to....
I stepped into the main room, dimly lit, to see Aric sitting in the chair.
"Aric. Where's everyo...."
"They are safe. As are you, at least for now."
"Aric, what's going...."
"We're leaving." He said as he got up. "No questions right now. Just do everything I tell you. You must. Please."
Never had I seen my friend so distraught, and yet so focused, and I went with him silently. We spent the remainder of the night travelling across the mainland to Raider's Cove. There we boarded a transport, and to my surprise, headed into the Rishi Maze.
A few jumps later, we met up with another ship - a small, but well maintained Nubian, and disembarked our transport with hardly a word from anyone on either ship. Two more jumps, and we repeated this process, this time boarding a very unremarkable YT model transport. Once on board, Aric's stoic demeanor seemed to dissipate a bit, and he sat back in his chair and closed his eyes for the first time since we left his house. He drew in and let out a calm breath. I felt like a question or two might be tolerated.
"Aric. Now?"
"Yeah Chrish. We can talk now."
"What in the name of Nal Hutta is going on?" I asked in a hushed but concerned tone. "Where are we going, and where is Ryna and Javin?"
"They are there," Aric said knowningly, eye's fixed on mine. My eye's widened slightly, and I nodded. "And as for what's going on, that's your doing. I've taken care of it, but now things change."
We spent the rest of the trip talking quietly, and with my guilt and regret building as we did. Aric HAD taken care of it, more masterfully than I thought possible. His skills and resources were well honed and prepared, and he had used all of them to fix the problem I'd created. He had known about my blunder with the man on Rishi, a man with close ties to the Empire. He'd been ready, knowing the likelyhood of someone taking an interest in him a real one. He'd gotten Ryna and Javin offworld by similar means, shortly before they'd come, and he'd used up all his money and favors to make all this happen. He'd run out of both when they came, using the last to arrange our transportation and affects. He was left with no other option than to kill, something I had never thought him capable of. That explained his change in demeanor, and the odor.....
A small chime went off after we were sitting in silence for what seemed like hours.
He opened a nearby compartment, and nodded at the inside.
"This is yours. Everything you need is here, and then some. I'm getting off here, and then Urrov will take you to your drop. Once there he'll also connect you with whoever you need to go from there." He paused, dropped his eyes down, and his shoulders followed. "Chrish, you can't.... you can't come back." His eye's came back up, but his shoulders and body didn't. "I've got nothing left Chrish. If he had friends, I couldn't do anything if they followed you....... I can't risk it. I can't risk them...."
He'd sacrificed everything for me, and even part of his soul, and he didn't seem upset with me at all. He seemed almost guilty telling me this. My mistake had cost him everything - everything short of his family. And where they were now wasn't a place to start much of a new life.
How does one repay such a debt? I had to make it right. Somehow....
The ships sublight drive kicked back on with a whir, and seconds later the pilot's voice bounced down the corridor that Aric's ship was ready to dock and take him abord. A small thud followed shortly after.
A final, silent hug goodbye, and he was gone. I hadn't known what to say. I wish I would have said something, but it was too late.
I sat in the lounge area for a hour before Urrov came back to check on me. The Ithorian pilot considered me for a moment, and then, with a quiet stero mumble, headed back toward the cockpit. A few minutes later, the sublight engines clanked off, and the hyperdrive motivators hummed to life.
