Name Rank Book & Page Description
Kill with Kindness 2 Remove Setback per rank of Kill with Kindness from Charm and Leadership checks
Grit 2 Gain +1 strain threshold.
Inspiring Rhetoric 1 Take the Inspiring Rhetoric action: make an Average Leadership check. Each Success causes 1 ally in close range to recover 1 strain. Spend Advantages to cause 1 affected ally to recover 1 additional strain.
Improved Inspiring Rhetoric 1 Each ally affected by Inspiring Rhetoric gains Boost on all skill checks for a number of rounds equal to ranks in Leadership.
Supreme Inspiring Rhetoric 1 Suffer 1 strain to perform Inspiring Rhetoric as a maneuver instead of an action.
Command 2 Add Boost per rank of Command when making Leadership checks. Affected targets add Boost to Discipline checks for next 24 hours.
Commanding Presence 1 Remove Setback per rank of Commanding Presence from Leadership and Cool checks.
Steely Nerves 1 Spend 1 Destiny point to ignore the effects of Critical Injuries on Willpower and Presence checks until the end of the encounter.
On My Order 1 As an action, make a Hard Leadership check. Choose a number of crew equal to Presence who upgrade the ability of their next Gunner check once, plus once per additional 2 Success.
Fire When Ready 1 As an action, make a Hard Leadership check. Choose a number of crew equal to Presence who downgrade the difficulty of their next Gunnery check once, plus once per additional two successes.
Ordnance Saturation 1 When the character or an ally who is currently benefiting from On My Order or Fire When Ready activates the Blast quality of a planetary-scale weapon, all ships or vehicles within close range of the target suffer damage equal to the weapon's Blast quality (plus 1 per additional success, as usual).
Confidence 1 The character may decrease the difficulty of any Discipline check to avoid the effects of fear by one per rank of Confidence. If [they] decrease the difficulty to zero, [they] do not have to make a Discipline check.
Galaxy Mapper 1 The character removes a setback dice per rank of Galaxy Mapper from [their] Astrogation checks. In addition, Astrogation checks take 50% less time (this does not increase with additional ranks of Galaxy Mapper).
Careful Planning 1 Once per game session, the character can choose to introduce a "fact" or additional context directly into the narrative as if they had spent a Destiny Point.
Outmaneuver 1 The character may take the Outmaneuver action, making a Hard Knowledge (Warfare) check. If the check succeeds, the character chooses one enemy ship or vehicle in the current encounter for each success result. Until the end of the character's next turn, the chosen ships must perform one extra maneuver in order to move or change range bands relative to the character's ship or allies.
Hyperspace Assault 1 The character may use Astrogation or Knowledge (Warfare) to determine their Initiative during an encounter in which they are piloting or commanding a starship. If they do so, they may spend a triumph from the check to choose the starting locations of all allied ships in the encounter.

Background

A scion of an ascendant family from Hevurion, Tols was groomed for success.

His great-grandfather, a destitute cropper, farmed on his Inner Rim homeworld, eking calories out of scrubland until he could afford to purchase a small mining concern. His grandfather attended school to become a physician in the capital city. His father, a mid-level bureaucrat who became the president of Hevurion's most esteemed university, pulled strings to get Tols accepted to the planet's most elite boarding school. Tols was then shipped off to the legendary Carida Academy to become a naval officer.

At Carida, Tols learned history, philosophy, and rhetoric in addition to strategy, physics, and astrogation. Upon graduation, he was immediately given the rank of Lieutenant in the Hevurion Grand Armada (ironically a fairly anemic planetary defense force) at age 22, a Captain at age 24, and a Commodore at age 26. His time in the service was largely uninteresting aside from the errant smuggler, pirate, or rescue incident.

Having ended two tours at age 29, Tols transferred to become a senior adjutant for the Republic Defense Coalition's Admiral Pevel Kronara for two years before his father arranged a position as a diplomat aboard Outset Station, hoping to get him some more experience outside of the system in preparation for an eventual run for the Galactic Senate.

How does Tols himself feel about all this? Who's to say? Does it matter?

Motivation

THE REPUBLIC: Educated in the Inner Rim and at the foremost officer school in the Galaxy, Tols is a firm believer in the good of the Galactic Republic.

AMBITION: Despite mixed feelings on his father's involvement in his career, Tols does want to climb higher because he knows he is capable of truly great things.

Duties

OBLIGATION: Favor (5+5 taken for XP)
Tols' father has called in several favors to advance his son's prestige at school and in the military. While many of them have been transactions between another party and his father, some of those favors might come back down to Tols himself.

OBLIGATION: Family (5 taken for XP)
Tols' father is a shrewd, stern man who, above all else, is seeking to elevate his family's standing among not just the people of Hevurion, but the galaxy. What else might he ask of his son to achieve that?

Description

Tols is an fair-skinned human of lean build, standing at two meters tall. His thick black hair is sprayed neatly into place, and close-cropped sideburns and a sporty mustache frame his angular face. He is currently age 31.

His "usual" outfit consists of a tailored suit, cut to military style with a draping asymmetric robe covering half of his frame. A black nerf-leather holster hugs his side with a gleaming pearl-handled blaster of sleek design within. His black leather boots contain a hidden vibroknife for emergency situations.

Tols is a bright and personable man with an easy-going smile, quick wit, and steady voice. While his experience on the frontier or even "in the Galaxy" writ large is quite lacking, he's well-educated and quite adaptable; cultured but not stodgy. Suffice to say, he can be positively magnetic when the need demands.

Other Notes

Tols' father, Torudo Tust, is a cunning, cutthroat man who has gotten more paranoid in his old age. As former Magistrate of the president of Hevurion's esteemed Kiintor University, widely considered the top school in the sector for science, the arts, technology, and medicine, he exercises soft power to help his family ascend to higher echelons.

Tols' mother, Hena Tust, is a senior systems engineer for the planetary government. While initially attracted to Torudo's ambition, she now chafes against his single-minded drive.
