Background

Curious and inquisitive, Jeren had spent most of his life within the Jedi Order in the pursuit of knowledge and the discovery of new things, be they species, planets or artifacts. Hardly unskilled in the use of either the lightsaber or the Force, he found he had always preferred the application of knowledge and words and -at least ideally- a productive discussion before resorting to other more straightforward ways in order to resolve a conflict or overcome a problem. In fact, he might very well have been content to serve the Order by going out there in search of lore both old and new or by acting as a diplomat or ambassador to some new and exciting world and species, both endeavors which he on more than one occasion undertook.

But alas, the universe, quite possibly via the Force, appears to on occasion make plans without first asking its inhabitants. In a manner of speaking anyway as what would come to be known as the Great Galactic War did not seem like much of a plan to him; too chaotic, as wars tend to be after all.

Regardless, the Jedi found themselves involved, for it seemed that if they were to remain keepers of peace, they would have to become, at least for a time, soldiers of war. And although there were exceptions, as more than a few Jedi remained in their previous positions, that did not hold true for Jeren, at least not for the war's entirety. For there came the time when his skills were required. Not only that, but the Jedi Council came to think that he needed a little more hands-on experience, having been among books and datacrons and scholars for quite enough time now.

And so, he has been sent to act as the Order's and the Republic's official representative in a trial regarding a group of special operatives and their apprehension by the Hutts. And not only that, but he is to remain with them afterwards. As a Jedi, he is used to controlling his emotions, certainly, but on occasion some mild exasperation does show. This is one such occasion.

Still, he will come to find soon enough that perhaps, just perhaps, he does not mind it as much as he has thought so far, that there is more to the life of a Jedi that just libraries and old temples. He may even come to see it as... well, a refreshing change.

Admittedly, it would have been even better if it did not happen in the middle of a war, albeit a somewhat cold one. For now.

Other Notes

Akari Voss: Jeren's former mentor and Master, he has not only attained the rank of Jedi Master, but is also a member of the Council and the one whose idea it was to send Jeren on this particular assignment. He felt his old apprentice was not only a good choice for such a task, but also thought he could do with the experience. While no longer a Master to the man, he is not one to pass up on an opportunity to teach his former apprentice one more lesson.

Kaeden Vallin: Jeren's younger brother by four years, he is a capable soldier for the Republic, having gone from a mere grunt to an officer thanks solely to his skills and abilities. The two of them share not only the bond brothers have, but also a sort of friendly rivalry, again as is on occasion expected of brothers.
