Background
Born into a family of farming magnates on the most boring planet in the Corellian Sector, Hal confounded teachers and found plenty of mischief as a youth.
At his earliest opportunity, Hal skipped Xyquine II and headed offworld to seek his destiny, or just some excitement. He found that and more in the seedy Blue Sector of the Corellia. His luck and skill in gaming soon had him living a precarious luxury lifestyle of booms and busts as he made his way around the galactic sabacc circuit.
His social mobility, freedom of movement, and wide net of contacts made him a juicy target for fast women in casinos around the galaxy. One such woman was a certain Imogen Skye. Despite his sharp mind, Hal could be awkward socially, and Imogen used that to play him like a xanth guitar.
Hal was smitten, but he was sharp too. Eventually he began to question some of Imogen's strange habits, and figured out her true role as a Rebel spy, using him to access various places and people. Hal was devastated and the two had a falling out.
His long association with a Rebel spy brought Hal to the attention of a cunning Imperial intelligence operative, who began making plans to trap the young gambler. Just as the snare was about to snap shut, Imogen arrived to save Hal. They shared their feelings for each other moments before the light faded from her eyes after sacrificing herself for him.
Hal was a changed man after the death of his prodigal lover. He sought out the Rebellion and signed up as a recruit, beginning his training. Imogen taught him the value of doing the right thing for the galaxy and the individuals within it. Now he finds himself on Jagomir...
Motivation
Motivation: Moral
Sometimes helping others is a reward in itself. Altruism may be a rare virtue, but smuggling attracts all sorts, and being a criminal does not mean the Smuggler has no moral code. A Smuggler might get a kick out of helping others, or he hopes to change the galaxy one good deed at a time. Either way, he wants to feel good about himself based on his own criteria. Whether he gains recognition as a hero or not does not matter.
Hal puts on a big act about being cynical, selfish and independent. But when the chips are really down for someone else, especially someone who can't really help them self, Hal is the first to lend a hand (and then pretend it was an accident or for a selfish reason anyway).
Obligations
Duty: Intelligence (0)
When collecting sensitive and valuable information, the Alliance rarely has the luxury of verifying it before taking the risk of action. Instead, the party supplying the intelligence must be trusted. Conversely, the one supplying the intelligence must trust that the information will not be used against him. Haleran specializes in finding contacts who can be trusted, building their trust in the Rebel Alliance, and maintaining that trust. His years of making his way in the glamorous, exotic, and often seedy world of the galactic gambling circuit have brought him a web of unusual contacts.
Description
Hal is rather indistinct, for a human. His hair is a dark blonde that could just as easily be described as light brown. The cut of his hair being typical of middle class males on most Imperial worlds. His grey eyes appear blue in some lighting conditions, green in others, though are often covered by dark goggles anyway. He has tanned, Caucasian skin. His flesh is not soft, due to his rural youth and recent military training, but he doesn't really look like the outdoorsy type either. His build can best be described as a modest medium, standing at around 1.8 metres in height, but not blessed by an abundance of muscle bulk.
Hal doesn't miss much, but does not give the impression of being particularly attentive. His manner is somewhat aloof from others and seemingly lackadaisical. Being naturally clever and agile, he has rarely needed to put a great deal of effort into his life to get ahead and it shows.
When he's not out on manoeuvres with his new Rebel allies, Hal dresses in plain heavy clothing, with little more than a utility belt of odd gear and a concealed holdout blaster.
While in the field, he wears padded armour, backpack, integrated operational equipment vest, carbine, etc, etc. He makes a good show of trying to be a proper soldier.
