Background

Childhood:
Dax Florens was born to his parents Raylan Florens and Ashra Toman on the planet Raxus in 61 BBY. A beautiful and lush terrestrial planet, the Florens were upper-middle-class farmers. From a young age, Dax was trained in the management of the farm and basic survival skills. He enjoyed shooting at small game that appeared around the farm, learning to use a rifle from an early age. Through this activity he bonded with Kell Odana, a farm-boy employed by the Florens. Dax’s parents did not exactly agree with this friendship, seeing it as unprofessional and not “proper.” Nevertheless, when Kell’s family fell upon hard times, Dax was able to convince his family to take them in. The two boys grew even closer to the point of practically being brothers.
After growing up, it was the Florens’ intentions to send Dax to a university in Raxulon to study business and be able to take up running the farm. When Dax found out that they would not be able to continue to support Kell and his family as well as send him to school, he refused to go. This caused a rift in the family to the point where Dax convinced Kell to run away with him. The two were able to find jobs as deckhands on a trading ship along the Perlemian Haul and Talcene Transit routes. For several years the young men made a meager living doing honest work. (44 BBY)

Family Man:
Between the many fleeting romances that a young twenty year old goes through, Dax and Kell spent many shore leaves on the planet of Saleucami. Dax found a girl there that he kept going back to. A young lady named Seirah Vinders. Every chance that Dax got he would go and visit her. They wanted to get married eventually, but Seirah insisted that they settle down; she didn’t want a husband who was constantly travelling around the galaxy. While Kell was upset that he wouldn’t be travelling with his best friend anymore, he understood. Dax invited him to get a job and live in the same city as them, but Kell declined. He felt he had already controlled enough of his friend’s life, and he needed to do his own thing. The newlyweds settled down on Saleucami. Dax managed a small farm outside of the city, while Seirah pursued her dream of being an artist. (38 BBY)
The couple thrived in their new life on the “oasis planet.” It was a simple life, and the farm wasn’t as nice as the one Dax grew up on. But it made do. Four years into their marriage, Seirah became pregnant with a child. Nine months later, a girl was born. They named her Layla. Kell was named her godfather. He visited when he could, and “Uncle Kell” had moved up in the ranks. He had made enough to buy his own ship, and started to do work for the Republic. This surprised Dax - in their work as deckhands, they often complained about the red tape and taxation from the Republic officials they ran into. Nevertheless, it was good pay for Kell. The family lived a happy life together in peace.

Life as a Separatist:
It was a quiet life for the Florens. When the Separatist Crisis occurred in 24 BBY, not much changed. Dax didn’t fully support either side. While he agreed that the Republic was corrupt and manipulative, his first goal was the prosperity of his own family. Besides, his good friend Kell often did work for the Republic. Dax was just not brave enough for politics. Saleucami was de jure a member of the CIS, with the strong presence of the Techno Union in the planet’s industry. The Republic took note of this, with the Supreme Chancellor calling it one of the planets within the “Triad of Evil.” This worried Dax, as he feared it might bring the war to his doorstep. His fears were confirmed in 21 BBY when several Republic vessels engaged the forces of General Grevious above Saleucami. Fearful that the war would continue on to the ground, Dax planned to evacuate his family from the planet. He got his wife and daughter onto the farm’s transport ship, and was to have it leave the planet for a nearby system while Dax finished getting everything in order. This was the mistake that turned his life around. The pilot of the transport vessel cut it too close to the space battle above. One of the Republic frigates mistook the transport for an escaping CIS vessel. The unarmed transport was blown from the sky without a chance, as Dax watched helplessly from below. He would never forget this moment. After a period of grief, Dax made a formative decision. He would join up in the Separatist army. The Republic would pay for their negligence.
After a short time of serving as a foot soldier, Dax quickly became a non-commissioned officer. He was noted for his leadership abilities. Sergeant Florens, as he was now known, served under Captain Blandin. Dax and the squad he commanded often cleaned up after the droid army rolled through. While Dax wouldn’t have described himself as happy, but it was a release after the death of his family. With time, the squad became like a second family to Dax. They referred to him as “Uncle Dax” - at times a painful reminder of his old family and the friend he lost contact with. While he suffered some battle wounds, Dax remained relatively safe. The few men that he lost under him were a hard hit to his morale. He kept reminding himself that he was doing this for his family, but he kept seeing dead comrades around him, at the hands of the Republic. By the last few months of the war he was promoted to Staff Sergeant. His squad was in transit to an Outer Rim planet when they received the message that the Separatist leaders were killed and the war was coming to an end (19 BBY).

Retreat:
Fearful of retaliation from the Republic, Dax commanded his squad to separate and flee, knowing their time was coming to a close. He took a small ship to an Outer Rim colony he had been to several times during his deckhand days. Taking up the name of his former friend Kell Odana, he once again returned to a life of farming. Due to his natural leadership and military skills, Dax found himself taking up the role of the local marshal when one was needed. He once again fell into a peaceful, albeit lonely life. It was from this planet that Dax witnessed the Republic transform into the Empire, and continue the corruption the Republic started. He often thought of both Kell, and what befell him, as well as his parents who he left behind on Raxus. He hadn’t contacted them in nearly 25 years now. There was nothing he could do now though - he needed to keep a low profile (18 BBY).
It seemed that Dax could not evade fate. After he left the role of Sergeant far behind him and he had a stable life in a peaceful community, conflict came to him once again. In 4 BBY, the Imperials decided to occupy the planet to exploit its resources and gain a greater grasp on the Outer Rim. Times became harsh, and it was difficult to once again see the prosperity of a community by oppressed by the Empire. At first he retained his title of marshal, but this was eventually stripped away by Major Brendall, in charge of the local Imperial forces. An arrogant man that one could assume got his position from his family rather than his abilities.

On the Run:
Shortly before the Battle of Yavin, Dax was making his rounds around the town as he came to do, making sure all was alright in the colony. It was not. That night he found in a back alley the Major along with three stormtroopers. They were beating a mother and father while the third trooper held two children back. Seeing this broke the fragile acceptance that Dax had come to. He ambushed the group with his rifle, taking down the stormtroopers and injuring the Major. He took the family to a ship, and they fled the planet. He transported them to the nearest neutral space station, and gave them enough credits to escape where they needed to.
Regardless, Dax himself was still on the run. He lived this way for close to a year, hopping from station to station. Eventually credits ran thin however, and he had to do some work as a deckhand once again. This went on for about a week before he was awoken from his sleep by Imperials entering his bunk with blasters drawn. It seems that his employer had given him up. Dax was arrested under the name of Kell Odana, and sentenced for assaulting an Imperial Officer. He was taken to an Imperial prison ship, and now awaits his fate...

Motivation

Overthrow the Empire:
Dax has a history with the Empire (and its predecessor). They caused the death of his family, and occupied his home for years. He sees the whole organization as brutal and corrupt bureaucrats and tyrants. They will pay for what they've done, and the people will earn their freedom.

Duties

Bounty (15):
Dax has the worst kind of bounty on his head: one from the Empire. He attacked and killed several Stormtroopers and injured Major Brendall. While he may be small fish for the Empire, they never forget when someone stands up to them.
