Background
Constructed in 3 AFE (16 BBY) by Industrial Automaton on Herstal, Astromech R3-P90 was immediately assigned to the Imperial Starfleet, assuming duty aboard the Venator-class Star Destroyer Tenacious.
This assignment would not last, however, as R3-P90 was soon transferred to the Liberator. This was followed by the Yamato, the Victor, and the Tyrant. Within his first two years of service alone, R3-P90 had served on over half a dozen different ships.
Imperial droids are routinely flushed, their memories wiped, in order to secure that they do not develop idiosyncrasies or personality traits that may interfere with operations. The rapid fire re-deployment of R3-P90, however, lead to an uncanny tendency to fall between the cracks of scheduled service cycles. This, combined with R3-P90 performing above expectations as time went on, inevitably lead to R3-P90 asserting his own personality, and this nascent personality was one of kleptomania and self-preservation.
As time went on, he used his assigned function and position to continue avoiding the erasure of his growing personality matrix, rescheduling as necessary. And then, eventually realizing that there was no way for him to excel in the confines of the imperial hierarchy, he simply rolled off the Lambda shuttle on-planet one day, just another anonymous droid in the crowd.
Motivation
• Ambition - Expertise:
R3-P90 is genuinely dedicated to his craft, and wants to excel in his chosen profession, in much the same way most droids come off the assembly line. In the case of R3-P90, however, as a result of his repeat wipe-dodging, his aspirations lie in theft and crime rather than protocol or technical engineering.
• Cause - Crime:
R3-P90 supports the very idea of black markets, mercenaries, and other groups that falls outside normal imperial or republican law, not merely because he is a criminal himself, but as a way to resolve the inherent logical conflicts that arise from the base corruption of his original programming. Crime is not simply a matter of counter-legality, but a function of enlightened self-interest as well as a natural socio-galactic force that arises within any sufficiently advanced civilization as the necessary evil of wealth redistribution.
Obligations
• Criminal (Magnitude 10):
There are multiple warrants of arrests on multiple worlds for R3-P90, for a string of crimes ranging from petty larceny to grand theft. While it is easy to blend in as an Astromech, it takes an increasing amount of effort to dissuade hunters and investigators from learning his whereabouts, and to stay one step ahead of the law, as well as to avoid certain systems.
• Obsession (Magnitude 10)
R3-P90 has an unhealthy obsession with thieving, sometimes bordering on idiosyncratic kleptomania. While rarely interfering with normal function, this can theoretically manifest at any time and for any reason, and potentially concern any object, from an uncontrollable desire to illegally acquire a specific type of chrono in general to a need to steal a local regent's pod racing prize.
Description
A standard R3 Astromech configuration, 97cm/34kg, easily mistaken for an R2-unit due to his fully opaque dome. Colored in a matte black with burnished durasteel, R3-P90 is almost indistinguishable from a standardized imperial model, which is both a blessing and a curse; it allows him to pass scrutiny or carry implied authority and protection in a host of situations, but also serves to make him a potential target of anti-imperial sentiment and suspicion.
While he may be easily identified as an imperial model at a glance, any detailed or internal examination will immediately reveal scratched-out serial numbers, carefully removed identifiers and Imperial insignias, and absent restraining bolts. Any qualified imperial technician with astromech experience may be capable of spotting certain after-market additions and hardware modifications at a distance, which could arouse suspicion.
