Background

Long ago, after the Great Galactic War against the Sith Empire, a wounded Jedi Order was preparing for another conflict against the dark side. The war had affected countless worlds and had left many secrets of the Force unaccounted for and many Jedi missing. Their numbers depleted, the Jedi authorized an experimental project to help supplement the much-reduced Academy of Jedi Archaeology: archaeological assistant droids with the capacity to effectively wield lightsabers. These droids, dubbed "Watchman" droids, would allow Jedi Archaeologists to travel in smaller groups than they did before: the droids' intelligence, sturdy construction, and experimental power and self-repair systems made them invaluable, unflagging assets even in the harshest dig sites; their combat skills likewise provided their sites with excellent security. Several Jedi archaeologists were even known to spar with the droids, noting them as capable fighters with an efficient (though perhaps uninspired) grasp on the intricacies of lightsaber combat.

The droids proved popular as field assistants, but their high-grade design made them an expense that the wounded Republic could scarce afford. The production line ended after only 25 units: AJA-X-12 was the twelfth of his line. He assisted the Jedi Archaeologist Zevulon Korvos on several digs and began to adopt his master's personality quirks. When the second Galactic War erupted, Korvos and his droid agreed to undertake daring missions into Sith space to recover lost Jedi Artifacts. During one of these missions, AJA-X-12 was left behind, trapped in a cave formation. Korvos promised he would return for the droid: unbeknownst do the droid, he would die days later. Awaiting a rescue that would never come, AJA-X-12 powered down and entered standby mode.

Over 3,500 years later, a mining expedition in the Outer Rim uncovered the ancient droid. Upon being reactivated, AJA-X-12 found his memory banks corrupted by centuries of disuse. He remembered almost nothing of his past. All he knew was his prime directive, the reason behind his very existence: "PROTECT AND SERVE THE JEDI ORDER." Upon hearing of the Order's destruction, AJA-X-12 decided he would seek out the few Jedi that remained; failing that, he would collect and safeguard the lost relics of the Jedi so that they might once again be used against those who would take up arms against the Empire. Every step he makes towards this goal seems to restore another portion of his missing memory. AJA-X-12 takes this as proof of the righteousness of his cause: He may be no Jedi, but he knows the Force guides him and rewards his devotion.

Motivation

CAUSE: Restore the Jedi
AJA-X12's desire to help protect what remains of the Jedi Order isn't just a personal quest: it's his hard-coded programming. He's dedicated to protecting now just the Jedi themselves, but their legacy. Every new dig site, every clue, every artifact is a chance for AJA-X-12 to fulfill his programming and bring the Jedi Order one small step closer to being reborn.

FAITH: The Cosmic Force
As AJA-X-12 makes steady progress on his (admittedly) nigh-impossible task of restoring the Jedi Order, parts of his lost memory and skills return to him. With what AJA-X-12 remembers of the Jedi teachings, he knows this is no coincidence: The Cosmic Force itself is rewarding his efforts, and guides his moves towards an ultimate destiny. Though the call of the Force is silent to his audio receptors, he takes some solace in the fact that he is more than an instrument of the Jedi: He is an instrument of the Force itself.

DISCOVERY: Self
Being an amnesiac droid out of time is an unusual sensation. What AJA-X-12 remembers of the galaxy in his time is somehow strange and yet somehow familiar to where he finds himself now. With the Jedi all but gone, he wonders, where does he stand in the world? Should he confine himself to what he once was, or is there a potential to become something greater?

How might AJA-X-12 best protect the legacy of the Jedi: safeguard their artifacts for the next generation of Jedi-to-be, or to travel a galaxy ruled by fear, determined to uphold the Order's ideals in practice? Perhaps to be Jedi was not the presence of the Force in one's veins, or the wielding of a lightsaber. Perhaps to be a Jedi was about protecting the weak, keeping the peace, and ensuring that justice be upheld throughout the galaxy. If that's true, if that's all that was truly important, then perhaps... perhaps, might he one day be considered "Jedi" himself?

These are thoughts that takes up no small part of his processing power.

Obligations

Oath:
Ajax-12 is bound by his programming to assist the Jedi Order in any way possible. This drives him to seek out rumors of surviving Jedi and to undertake dangerous expeditions in the hope that he will recover lost Jedi Artifacts.

Bounty:
"In retrospect, perhaps telling every person who found me that I'm an ancient Jedi droid who must reunite with his Masters wasn't perhaps the best idea. But in my defense, they didn't LOOK like Sith! How was I supposed to know they can't keep a secret!? Well, I suppose it's not the first time that Imperial-sponsored bounty hunters have been after me...

It's actually a bit strange that it's happening again."
