Shan was born on Corellia to a shipbuilding labourer and his wife. He dreamed he'd become a fighter pilot someday, even an ace. He would often skulk around the shipyards, collecting trinkets and imagining his life ahead as the greatest TIE fighter pilot ever. During an Corellian Resistance operation he was injured and captured by the Empire, mistaken for a resistance fighter. As the only prisoner, he was intensely interrogated, without success. Having exhausted his usefulness, Shan was processed to be sent to the spice mines. With an ability learned through years in the shipyards, he was able to escape the prisoner transport, and disappear into the depth of Corellia. Once an enthusiastic future recruit, Shan begins to hone his skills on the streets, vowing retribution on the heads of his captors.
