Background
The Poor and the Hungry. Astra’s parents were tricked into contracted indentured servitude on Dantooine. Despite their cruel masters forcing them to live poverty-stricken in a dirty, uninsulated hovel with barely enough food for the three of them, their faith in the Force never wavered. They tried to instill that faith in Astra, but she preferred to place her faith in something she could control. As soon as she could pick up a knife, Astra ventured out to hunt small, wild creatures to try to stave off another night of going to bed hungry. Eventually, she came to view her parents as hopelessly deluded and ran away. In Dantoo Town, she fell in with a street gang simply for survival, later “escaping” once again when Jedi Master Sola sensed her Force potential and offered to take her on as a padawan learner. Astra is torn, being still angry at her parents for allowing themselves to be taken advantage of, while also having deep empathy for those in similar situations.
Motivation
Experiencing the Force: Pragmatic Power. Astra’s parent weren’t wrong. The Force is with her, but she is sometimes as angry with it as she is her parents. For her, it is a tool to use to ensure her freedom and survival. She doesn’t believe that the Force is inherently good or evil, and that it can be used to do help or harm by the will of the practitioner. She doesn’t believe that it has any conscious direction and the consequences of one’s actions rest squarely on the shoulders of the Force-sensitive user.
Heeding the Call: Desire for Understanding. A true craftsman masters their tools, and so it is with her. Once she understands the extent of her abilities, she’ll decide what path to walk with them. Then again, maybe the path that she takes to learn and grow more powerful will decide for her.
Motivation: Freedom. Astra’s upbringing has predisposed her to be particularly ill-tempered to those who enslave and oppress others, especially through trickery. It is her intention to return to her roots and strike down individuals and organizations that champion and promote these vile practices once she feels she is powerful enough.
Secondary Motivation: The Missing Master. Following a recent mission on behalf of the Jedi Order, Astra's former mentor, Master Taryn Sola, has gone missing. She trusts few, but looks up to another of Master Sola’s former padawans, Jedi Knight Avnis Tarn and refuses to be separated from her until Master Sola is found, even if it means defying the Jedi Council.
Morality
Strength: Bravery. Astra learned at a young age that being meek simply meant that she was going to miss every good opportunity and allow others to take advantage of her. Succumbing to fear would only lead to enslavement or imprisonment. Fear paralyzes the mind and body, and paralysis leads to death, whether at the hands of her parents’ captors, a wild animal, or a gang thug. Astra feels fear the same as others, but she will never allow it to control her. If she is to die, she will do it on her own terms, not the terms of others, and this philosophy has shaped her into a ferocious young woman.
Weakness: Recklessness. The flip side of her bravery, Astra’s small size meant that she was always viewed as weak or even prey. Aggressive, decisive, even savage action was often the only thing that kept her alive once she began venturing out on her own. Between surprising her opponents, and listening to and harnessing the Force unconsciously, she has, so far, always managed to survive and come out of any conflict with minimal injuries, usually in a superior position than she started. However, this path can be ill considered and even the Force won’t always tilt the odds in her favor. It also leads to a sense of individualism that can make teamwork with her problematic.
