Background
Rusty grew up on Chad, the Chadra-Fan homeworld. He stood out in his early years as one of the few Chadra-Fan with red fur, which brought with it attention and jealousy. However, one horrible incident overshadowed his childhood: the Death-Wave in 10 BBY. Tsunamis on Chad were a regular event, but the Death-Wave was special. It wiped out Rusty's family treehouse. All other members of his family drowned. He was lucky enough to be saved only because his red fur made him easy to spot by the rescue crews.
Since that day, Rusty decided he needed to leave Chad, which was dangerous, and find a new family. It also taught him that nothing in life was permanent, and that he needed to enjoy everything in the moment. Rusty, desperate to leave Chad, joined up with the bounty hunter gang called the Shanghai Syndicate, who only took jobs capturing bounties wanted alive. Rusty helped the Syndicate create a trap for their target when they visited the planet hunting a fugitive, impressing the hunters with his mechanical tinkering.
Rusty flew around the galaxy for a couple of years for the Shanghai Syndicate, learning the bounty hunting ropes. He was mainly used as a scout by the gang, due to his short height and great perception. Otherwise, he modified the gang's weapons and armour. He started to get a bit of a reputation as a clumsy fool when he ruined a hunt by accidentally ensnaring a local Marshal. Rusty took the jokes about him with good spirit and was just happy to have a crew and see new worlds, and poke around with his gadgets. Despite the danger, it felt safer than facing more tsunamis. And there was very little chance of him drowning in space.
After developing a decent reputation, the Shanghai Syndicate got a big break with a risky job on one of the core planets: Corellia. The rewards were beyond anything they'd ever seen before. The contact was anonymous, which made them uneasy, but the credits were too good to be true. The bounty was off the books, which broke one of the Syndicate's core rules. But Jysell, the Syndicate's leader - a female Nautolan with a silver tongue - convinced the gang to take the bounty.
Their target was a rich and popular Corellian politician, Crix Vigil, who lived in a large mansion in the Governmental Sector of Coronet City. Rusty did one brief scouting run of the Sector and ruled out any attack on his house, which was guarded by heavily-armed security droids. The Syndicate instead planned to kidnap Crix on his daily commute to the council buildings by airspeeder. Rusty helped hack and steal several fast swoop bikes and the plan was set.
They attacked at dawn. Rusty thought the orange sun reflecting off Coronet City's plethora of towers was one of the most beautiful things he had ever seen. He was sat on the back of Jysell's bike, too small to drive his own. They dipped down alongside Crix's speeder, and couldn't believe their luck: his normal bodyguards were completely absent. As Jysell and Rusty boarded the speeder, Crix turned to them and smiled. Two huge security droids emerged from beneath the speeder and opened fire.
Rusty couldn't remember much after that beyond the red flash of blaster fire and then some falling. Somehow, he had survived, but his leg was caught in a dangling wire and he was rocking in the wind beneath the speeder, helplessly watching as the battle unfolded above him as speeders and swoop bikes sped through the sky, past stunned commuters.
By the time Jysell pulled him up, the battle was over. Not without losses: their enforcer, the Wookie Kitwarr, had been blown off his swoop bike. But the important thing is they had Crix chained up. Chad could almost smell the amazing gadgets he could build with all those credits. But they weren't the only ones in the sky. With flashing lights and booming voices warning them to surrender their weapons and stop the speeder, the Corellian Security Force had arrived.
The chase was epic. Blaster fire exchanged down around tight turns. Narrowly missing speeders and towers. The wind in his hair and a smile on his face, Rusty reckoned this was the most fun he'd had in years. They managed to escape CorSec - briefly at least - but their future looked bleak. Agents were scouring every street and alley in Coronet City, and they had few friends in Corellia to lend them a hand.
Jysell came up with a plan - like she always did. They kidnapped another Corellian who looked a bit like Crix and dressed him up in Crix's clothes. Rusty was told to transport that Corellian in the speeder, towards the spaceport. Meanwhile, Jysell and the others would take the real Crix back to their ship. Jysell promised that they would come back for Rusty once they had stowed Crix safely, and gave him a homing beacon so they could find his exact location once he drew away CorSec and escaped.
But it didn't go down like that. Rusty never saw Jysell or the rest of the Syndicate ever again. He'd barely got going by the time CorSec surrounded him. Overwhelmed, he surrendered, knowing at least they hadn't found the real Criz. The agents that arrested him laughed as they told him he'd been betrayed - they'd be given his homing beacon details by the Syndicate, who'd told them that he was the leader of the gang and the plan was his whole idea.
Rusty was charged with disturbing the peace, theft, and attempted kidnapping. Rusty took the years and said nothing about Jysell, the Syndicate, or where Crix Vigil had been taken to, despite an offer from the Corellian authorities for a severely reduced sentence if he gave his old gang up. Rusty knew the rules: no snitching, ever. Despite this he found himself for the first time in his life quite annoyed by the betrayal. He decided, if he ever got free, that he would need to hunt down his old gang and some point and ask them why. For now though, he needed to find some new friends.
