Background
Dat Gui grew up in one of the slums of Zoland during the years of forced ghettoing and oppression at the hands of the Zolanders. Unable to travel outside of the gated confines of his Ghetto, Dat survived on an iron will, a temeritous tenacity and uncanny understanding of the underworld. But secretly he always dreamed of joining the venerated ranks of the Mabari warrior knights. An admission he never shared. After years of living on the streets scratching out an existence of grit and misery practicing his shapeshifting, he seized upon an opportunity to escape and fly.
He memorized the guard schedule on the ghetto's walls and began studying the technicians that came and went every day to make the small repairs inside the ghetto. After weeks of studying he memorized the facial features and wardrobe of one of the techs who had a tendency to dally with the local Clawdite women in exchange for some trinkets and food. As the tech was making his way back from a rendezvous Dat hit him over the head with a rock. But the blow was harder than intended and the tech was killed. With no time for regret, he shifted into the tech’s likeness, stole his credits and gate pass and headed through the checkpoint.
Without more than a cursory glance, he was waved through finally free. Ashamed of how far he had fallen from his dreams of heroism and the Mabari tenets Dat sought only to escape. Using his stolen identity, he made his way to the nearest Starport planning to beg, borrow or steal his way off Zolan. Dat's opportunity came from an unlikely place. A colonist ship headed for the rim was forced to make an emergency landing for repairs and resupply and Dat stole away in the cargo hold only to be discovered by the onboard security.
When brought before the chief of security on the ship, he spun a tale of mostly the truth about his desire to escape and an accident that caused him to need to flee. The chief quickly realized the mind for crime that Dat had and vowed to show him how to use it for the benefit of others. how to uphold the law. And having an eye for talent and a kind heart the chief took pity on Dat and put him to work. Deputizing him on the spot with a simple oath about the greater good and serving the people of the colony. The security staff of the ship was to become the town law enforcement when the colony ship landed at its final destination.
The ship launched later that day one Clawdite heavier than when they landed. Although, no one on the security staff new Dat was a Clawdite. But his law enforcement career began. The ship made its final landing and Security turned to marshals. The colony grew. And as it grew so did the crime. The simple pickpockets became larceny became assault became murder. And with each passing year the crime worsened and darkened the colony.
Beginning to see his hopeful future begin to sink back into the darker parts of his past Dat began pushing the line of the law. At first a little. A little lie, a misrepresented fact. Those little things became planted evidence and coerced witnesses. But nothing he did seemed to make a dent in the on-world scum destroying his new home.
He began using his shapeshifting to appear as people he knew committed crimes, reenacting similar crimes in view of witnesses that would talk or cameras that would record the evidence. And the next day he would arrest the criminals. Some fled, But most he caught. Until one day as he was wearing the face of a crime lord, he witnessed an appalling sight. A drunk Hutt enforcer was beating on a young mother. Dat quickly shed his Criminal face changing back to the technicians face he wore as a lawman. And shot the enforcer dead.
To justify the shooting the marshalls pulled the local camera footage hoping to catch sight of the assault so they could clear their friend. But they witnessed two crimes. The assault and the shapeshifting. A new lifetime of law enforcement was overturned. Mobsters freed, every case he touched tainted.
Dat was brought before the security chief who had taken pity on him so long ago. The chief had no words. He simply took his martial badge and left the room silently. Leaving the door notably open as he left. Knowing how short a life span he would have in prison on the planet he had worked as a martial Dat freed himself from his bindings and fled the marshal station with all speed.
Racing home, he narrowly beat his former colleagues. He had just enough time to pack his off-duty blaster and a single set of clothing. He changed his face and walked out the door, headed for the spaceport. He boarded the first ship he could find, searching for a new place and a new face.
