Background
1. Sinje Djinna sensed a dark system while sailing through an intergalactic filament.
2. Obsession: discover a legendary artifact. Assembled a crew to sail far beyond the outer rim. Crew ran out of food and were forced to cannibalize.
3. Sinje sling shot around the black hole, catching the X-ray jet in his sails. He let destiny decide where to take him (can be introduced as frozen in carbonite or recently thawed).
4. Mund Guero was his childhood friend, who turned bitter rival after discovering Sinje knew they had a low probability of success before embarking.
5. Battling the Gatekeeper, Kei-Wei, in a test of will for the location of the religious artifact.
Backstory
Sinje is a 3000 year old Polis Massan that was frozen in carbonite, off and on, for 2870 of those years. Due to his race, technology of the time, and force sensitivity, he remained in a semi-conscious lucid state for 100 of those frozen years.
Sinje put together a crew to find an ancient religious artifact, said to be able to prevent a cataclysm like the one that destroyed Kallidah. Having inherited the light-sail ship, Mirage, the crew embarked on the long voyage out of the galaxy.
Sinje was an inexperienced but obsessive archaeologist. He boldly set sail through uncharted space without a hyperdrive, at the age of 28. His childhood friend and astronomer Mund navigated using onboard telescopes to calculate a course through the galactic filament, in hopes of finding a legendary artifact in a dark solar system far beyond the outer rim, as described by a sacred religious book.
Centuries later, crew members began to die in their hibernation chambers. Mund said he was ejecting makeshift coffins, but in reality, he was harvesting their meat to keep he and Sinje alive. At this point they were metabolically and mentally frail. Sinje began to feel the system get closer, communicating with someone in his lucid dreams, but his team doubted its existence. Fear and anger consumed the crew.
Upon arrival to the system, droids identified themselves as the Gatekeepers. They would tell Sinje where the artifact was if he passed their test of Will. They awakened an old force sensitive man known as Kei Wei to battle Sinje. Sinje lost and the Mirage was cast away, causing his friend Mund to spiral. Sinje felt a darkness enter Mund, the same darkness he sensed from the system.
The remaining crew members used the black hole of the system to sling shot back towards the heart of their galaxy, filling their large gold sails with an X-ray beam. Having no idea where the beam aimed him, they set the carbon-freezing chamber to wake them a handful of times in the next 1000 years. Mund harvested the rest of the crew until only the two of them remained. The darkness stayed with them, perhaps as part of the test. The Mirage was eventually found (@location); but Sinje, still frozen inside, was alone and Mund was nowhere to be found.
